Wiki says it's the M21 BMW diesel (based on the M20). Does a S54 bolts to the transmission? 
The bigger question is can you add boost.
The answer is they are boosted. But not very powerful. 114 hp & 155 lb-ft. They run the same engine as the e28 diesel.

The crank from the diesel is sought after to make super duper gasoline engines...I think. Or is that the 6 cylinder Nissan diesel.

The Nissan L28D or maybe LD28 crank lets you make a 3.1L gas L-Series. Comes in a Maxima Diesel. Also the exhaust manifold and turbo from a 280ZX Turbo can bolt on a Diesel Maxima to make a turbo diesel Maxima that will actually get out of it's own way.
