Having owned an automatic one (which decided it hated me so much that it spun a rod bearing to the point of seizure after a few months) I can't see how the manual would make it better, marginally faster perhaps, but worse at being a squishy low effort to drive transportation box.

He started one but then the engine blew up. 
I had a friend who had one of these years ago. It had nearly half a million miles on it when he got it, and although he was absolutely terrible at driving something with a stick (and driving/maintaining a car in general), it put up with his abuse way longer than any car should.
