Non Running RX8 -- $2000 -- NMNA
In reply to markwemple:
I really don't know. I'd have to do some internet sleuthing to figure that out. I was thinking the secret would be a new engine but I'm a fatalist....
The "trick" is that a new starter, plugs and coils often resurrect a "low compression" RX8 Renesis.
Unless the owner can prove it's got the latest starter and either an upgraded coil kit or new OEM coils in the last 30k miles, it's worth a try. Of course the owner might actually have a compression test showing that it's got low compression. The Mazda reman isn't that expensive, but it's not really cost effective even if you can replace the engine yourself - IIRC the reman is about 4500 or so, but even with a new engine I doubt the car is worth more than $6500-$7000.
That said, given the cost of the OEM cat, unless that comes with the car I don't think it's worth the money unless you live somewhere where you'll never have to smog it. Aftermarket cats with very few exceptions don't last very long behind a rotary.
I paid $900 for a running 2004.
All my research says an LS swap is a very advanced swap, and I've never seen a completed one. You have to move the steering linkage, cut the front subframe, build a center trans mount, figure out how to deal with the fact that the shifter will be too far back, and hack the canbus if you want the gauges to work.
I have an LS, and still not sure if I am going to do it. It's a helluva lot of work for a car that is gonna weigh 1000 lbs more than a V8 swapped Miata. I might just drop it in the RX7 or a Miata.
