Personally, one with a GM or Ford 3.8L with a stick would be an amazingly fun and reliable automobile
I have seen 215 Buick V-8's that look Store bought in them. But it doesn't matter much what you want to restore, buy in is 20 grand. Safety is paramount for a first car. being able to throw it away afterwards saves money.
The sunroof is aftermarket, and probably a disaster.
Lots of little aftermarket pieces on that though, air cleaners, light covers, exhaust, etc. Might not be a bad parts car.

Lil Stampie is the same. 90% of the cars he wants I say no way. I think we're heading to a CAM style truck as a compromise.

And here I was hoping you'd offer to swap this for your Miata if I bought it & brought it over to you.

She also loves Wranglers, but her mother is putting the kibash on that idea.
(I'm sure my avatar photo has nothing to do with that)

5k wont make that one a nice MGB.
Unless it is purchased by the Nelsons, they would somehow make it an amazing car for less than $2018.... but for the rest of us mere mortals, that is a true statement

Depends on what's under that puddy. And how much fabrication it would take to drop in a Mazda BP or FE motor or Nissan SR20DETT.
BP is easy, not sure on the others, but judging from the rockers, that BGT needs reinforcement before you drop in 200% or more power into it. At least it is not a convertible, my first car was an MGB and it rusted so bad that we could not open the doors after a small "off road" adventure. The BGT at least won't fold in half when you drop the hammer......

I have followed a few of the Nelson builds. They bring sweat equity to the effort at a level that most of us can not pull-off. In many cases, it is better economics to swap billable hours for dollars and buy stuff, rather than spend limited spare time too save $$$.

CAM style Wrangler? On the way to school this morning I was asked about an Audi TT. My response was sure as long as he paid for the 16 year old male in a sports car insurance. Maybe I'll just not let him get his license until he's out of the house.

I suspect that the main concern about an MGBGT for an offspringmobile isn't so much reliability as that from a safety standpoint it's like crashing a tin can full of pointy sticks compared to a more modern vehicle.

I thought it was just because it was very late, but now it is morning and I still have no idea
What do you mean by "CAM style"?
In reply to Ransom :
The lack of safety, yes. But it also needs to be reliable, and no engine swapped British car is going to be as reliable as a factory fuel injected 4.0.
