The only way to do it is to play deep in the recoup part of the rules.

The rules allow for recouping up to half the budget- for 2017, that would be $1008.50.

Anything you take off the car (or a parts car) could be sold to recoup in the budget.

So, let's say (for example) you want to convert it to a 1.8L engine. You buy a parts car with a running 1.8L for $800, pull the motor, and put it in this car. Your budget would be at $2817. However, you have a 1.6L engine to sell, and all the remaining parts from the 1.8L car.

You sell the 1.6L for $350, and from the 1.8L you sell the tombstone ($25), the transmission ($150), the wheels ($200), 1 door ($75), and the rear beauty panel ($75). You then sell the balance of the shell of the parts car for $400. You sold a total of $1275, but you can only recoup $1008.50. Put the $266.50 in your pocket.

You now have the car complete with a 1.8L engine, and your budget stands at $1808.50 ($2817- $1008.50). You have $208.50 left to spend.

Sounds a little like magic money, huh? That's the way Challenge math sometimes is.

The trick is to buy the parts car well. It needs to have all the parts you are looking for.

Challenge math is fun. We're looking at buying a complete Jeep XJ for one part. That'll give us the ability to sell more parts to hit the $1008 limit.

I personally agree with you. That is not what was defined in the Town Hall meeting this year. I realize you were not there, but it was a pretty stiff discussion. I tried hard to take the position you are. I lost.

I don't make the rules, I just play by them.

Me too.

I think people somehow thought that only being able to recoup up to the purchase price meant that people who bought cheaper were penalized. The thing is, if you buy a $200 car vs a $500 car and recoup the $500 out of both, the $200 starting point is not a disadvantage. In both cases you are at $0 challenge budget, but in the $200 car scenario you still have $300 MORE in RECOUP AVAILABLE!!!!!! (and 300 more beer dollars).

I was not able to clearly articulate that at the town hall meeting.

"If you buy a part for $40, decide it won’t work, then resell that part for $50, you may not recoup $10." Simple enough.

That language is relating to a totally unrelated part to the whole build. As much as I agree with the original rules of not recouping more than any one deal currently the rules allow that to happen as long as some part from the deal makes it onto the car.

Supposedly, I wasn't there, this was discussed at the town hall meeting and the new rules "may" show this clearer.

As much as I want to buy the mumpkin I have too many cars already.

Andrew, as I noted, I agree with you. With all due respect, this is not the place for a debate about the budget. The Town Hall meeting was.

I made the case as clearly as I could. Several of the old timers sitting around me agreed. It was shot down.

If you are interested in the Mumpkin, I would be thrilled to see it become a Nelson family asset.
