I've had this thing for a while now and thought I should start documenting the build. Picked it up in December for $1000 thinking it would be a good starting point since My First Vette Build turned out to be rustier than the Titanic.

I found it on CraigsList and was amazed how rust free it was. Better yet the interior is near perfect. The only problem is horrible rolled on paint, but until it peels off I'll leave it.

Here is the original ad.

Next I bought some Panasports from Powar but they were 4x108 instead of 4x100. Some adapters later and they look great, but rub a bit. I also swapped on the blacked out grille and bezels from my 85 rust bucket.

Then this week I mounted the $100 Mini Cooper wheels I picked up on CraigsList with decent rubber. These also needed spacers but the fit is perfect and the handling much improved.

Future plans call for a decent repaint using the 76 hood and headlights snagged by Strike Zero here. Also the 5 speed from the rust bucket and possibly a full trackworthy suspension upgrade

Growing up in NW Ohio I knew many people that worked in the engineering side of the auto industry. There were always stories of test mules being built as engineering exercises. One I remember was a Chevette with a small V6 and a T5 5 speed. I think it was a 2.8 which would be about right timeline wise. Word got to higher brass that there was a Chevette turning better lap times than the current Corvette and they ordered it crushed.

The coolest car that I got to ride in that was never put in production was a turbo V6 Fiero. A friend's dad worked at AP parts that makes most of the OEM exhaust systems and they had it for a few weeks fitting different exhaust systems on it. Again, the car performed too well and that was a problem.

I have a 2.8/T5 for the 77 in my avatar picture. Thread for that coming soon.

Very nice! I kinda like it best with the Panasports and white letter tires.

I have a couple thousand pounds of books from my wife's grandpa who worked at the Milford Proving Grounds. We found these sorting through them and I immediately thought of this thread, because Chevettes are cool. Let me know if you want them.
