Thought I should start my own build thread:
Idea is to make this a car I can take to the track, or auto-x yet drive home. Already did some weight reduction by taking out stereo :D (Well PO fudged up wiring, so had to take it out anyway lol)
But first gotta get this runnin!
Here is old progress
http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-my-friend-second-gen-mr2/69311/page2/
Aight so my parts shipped in today:
Rebuilt Distributor by Twos R' Us (OEM - $300)
Ignition Coil - (OEM - $70)
Igniter - (OEM - $300)
All for $45 shipped from a forum member. Woot woot, installing it sunday. See how this goes
Not going to be fun fiddling with timing after putting in this dizzy. Maybe mechanic fudged up timing, that's why it was so sluggish. That and the gasket leak
And here teh whipz:
Installed new distributor, no luck. Won't even crank now.
Electrical issues :'(

Are you sure that then "new" used distributor is any good? Not knocking the member but with electronic components anything can happen.
In reply to eg6ajk:
I had an Mr2OC member come out and check the car, he's suggesting I put the old one back in to see if it works. If so, then you're right this "new" one could be bad
Also, we worked on diagnosing it together and found that the main body harness is bad. So he is going to source a 5SFE one for me
It's alive! My friend did the wiring, fixed a ground, adjusted the idle, adjusted the springs because they were loose and not sitting flush at top and bottom, and took out my dumb cruise control all for $230
So happy, I put on 100 miles today, so...so far so good.
Next on the list, brakes and possibly timing as well
Looks great! My Mk1 was red too. I'll definitely be watching your progress as I think a track day / autocross MR2 may be in my future as well.
Is this an N/A car?
It looks like you're sorting out the bugs before turning to performance/track worthiness? Always a good call.
In reply to ShadowSix:
I dig the Mark1, you don't have it anymore? Yes it is an N/A car unfortunately, but it's still a very fun & quick car. Oh yeah, definitely going to fix this up. Have to take care of brakes, timing belt, seals, lotta stuff before I can race it. My tires are bald too.
My friend took a pic of me tonight. This guy was such a gentleman, drove 30 minutes from fairfax to deliver the car, and even put a little gas in. gave him a ride back and he lead me back on the route back to school. His car was shooting flames = I Lol'd hard. We'll see how long it goes for crossed fingers
In reply to Sal_the_man:
No, tragically I sold the Mk1 years ago so I could buy... a V6 5-spd non-SVT Ford Contour. I have no idea what I was thinking.
I'd prefer an NA car at the moment, I'm too rusty on the track to go directly to a powerful turbo car. What's the NA, 135 hp? That'd be about right.
Our cars are nearly identical lol... Mine is car #00000075. The PO did a turbo swap on it.
Hit me up Dansxr2 at yahoo dot com
In reply to dansxr2:
haha no way! Our ride heights look similar, what are you lowered? I have TEIN coilovers.
3SGTE swap? Sweet, I'd like to do a 3VZ-FE swap next summer if my wallet and the car permit me too

I have heard that the 3vz is great in this chassis. I'd love to see one with ITBs!
Hey Sal, I have a turbo off of one of these I would sell you for $50, no shipping required...
Gonna run it at Harry Grove on Nov 16th and 17th?
In reply to Apexcarver:
I would be interested if I had the 3S turbo motor but I don't :/
What turbo is it? I have a friend who wants a CT27
Didn't know CDC was still hosting events. I'll be down to spectate but not run. I'm guessing you're going?
If we're offering turbos, i have a Bullseye hybrid CT t3/t4 of some sort sitting here, should be good to 350whp-ish range.
In reply to ShadowSix:
Well, you do have an extra two cylinders there.
Yeah around there. Doesn't seem like much on paper, but I'd say power is good for this car. It's nothing like corolla or civic power as one might expect.
Supercharged Mk1s are awesome!
In reply to Swank Force One:
Ha again, if I had the turbo motor...from what I have seen mr2oc & mr2 forums are always swarming with buyers
In reply to Swank Force One:
Lol.
Sal, yeah I am an organizer for CDC. I usually run my Miata.
The turbo is a dual inlet CT-26 IIRC, let me know if you know someone who might want it.
In reply to Apexcarver:
Oh cool! I went to an event at Bowie this past summer with my I30. There was an awesome green turbo miata when I was there.
I'll ask my friend today in regards to the turbo
I think the green turbo miata your thinking of is now plasti-dipped blue.
I remember your car now!
In reply to Apexcarver:
Word, it had a huge spoiler last time I saw it
Enough talk, progress time! My current brakes are warped so ordered new rotors and semi-metallic pads from NAPA.
My friend's father is the manager of the stores in our region so he got me four rotors and pads for all of them for a meager $140! Good rotors for racing, no cross drilled or slotted balogney
Going to do a coolant flush as well as an oil change next week when I get the time. Tbh I haven't checked the oil level since I got the car :O
Teh picz
So did the front brakes, but as I was taking off the bolt holding the caliper to its bracket, it snapped -____- Soooo I am going to see if my friend has the caliper and bracket from his parts car
Did an oil change too, black as ish. Engine is much smoother now, less rattly. I'll post pictures up later
