I am helping my son build a 1966 Mustang, the car started out as a 289 and now has a 302 with a factory automatic transmission. He wanted a manual transmission and we found a 5 speed out of a 2006 mustang V6 car that was being parted out. From the part numbers and looking at pictures I now am pretty sure the transmission is a Tremic 3650. Has anyone else tried to install one of these behind a 302?
A real quick search says that the transmission is not used behind a V6. V8 only. The 3650 is rated by Ford for 360 ft-lbs, so as long as you're not going crazy with the power, it should hold up just fine. This is assuming the 4.6 and 302 share a bellhousing.
The 3650 does not bolt up to a early 302, 351, etc, just the 4.6L mod motors. The bell housing is part of the transmission (its the front cover for the internals), so you can't just change the bell housing.
Thanks for the input, my friend is bringing over a 302 bell housing to compare it to. Sounds like we should sell the 3650 and find a T5 (what I thought I was buying).

The T5 was available with the V6 up through 2004, if I Remember correctly. These are generally called SN95-New-Edge Mustangs.
The World Class V8 T5 was used in Fox Mustangs from about 1985 or maybe earlier through 1993. I would start with the 1987 model year, as I am certain those cars had the WC box.
The V8 SN95 cars also received a revised version of the T5 in 1994 and 1995. It has a longer input shaft and a few other changes.
Some of the the other Tremec transmissions will work behind a Windsor, but they require a different bell housing and associated parts.

Wikipedia says the T-5 was behind the V6 up until 2010. A picture should clear this up.

It may be a T5. The shifter setup on the 2005 and up cars is different. I am not sure about the Bell housings.
Here is a Fox body T5 for reference:
