Well, ChassisFlex Motorsports needed a new tow rig. The 1993 GMC K1500 was long gone (never made it to 400 torques), the 2008 GMC 2500HD 6.0L was tried but it needed a bit more love than I was willing to give it, and the 2004 GMC 1500 crew cab 4x4, while a great everyday truck, was not going to cut it hauling fuel around the country and towing 10k+ lbs through the mountains.
Enter, the Duraflex (the name is meant to complement the rallycar names, the Tal[hoon] unofficially being the original Flex and the rally STi being officially Flex1).
The truck has 410k kms. It was being offered for sale for $6500 which was too much, it needed work. However, a day or two before I managed to get out to see it, the salesman at the dealership told my dad (my dad was also shopping for a duramax) that the truck was limited in power at 2200rpm.
We went out, took a look, I told them I'd give them $4500, which gave me about $2k to play with getting it fixed. Considering the injectors had been replaced in 2009 (so the newer, better injectors) along with the CP3, I figured it may have been a more simple issue (like the fuel lines being sucked closed due to deterioration. Fun fact, LB7 duramaxes use a vacuum fuel system with no lift pump from the tank. Weird right?).
The truck runs fantastic except for the 2200rpm issue. Been reading my brains out trying to figure out what could be the issue and fighting with hptuners to work properly with the LB7.
I stumbled across an interesting post this morning. I know that this 2001 is equipped with an aftermarket hi-idle module, as that feature wasn't available until 2003-ish. Apparently the hi-idle unit will keep a truck from running over 2200rpm, even though the hi-idle is activated only when it park with your foot off the brake pedal.
In any case, I was starting to get dejected and found the hi-idle switch. I turned it off, and voila! Truck runs like nobodies business. Its actually hard to imagine the truck has 400k kms on it. No rattles at all! It needs an alignment and the tires balanced, but its basically ready to go.
And the truck my dad bought:
Next thing to do is to shake the truck down in stock form and see if there is anything else that needs to be taken care of. After that, I'll install a tune via HPTuners, and it might get a mid-travel front end kit
