So I have been casually purusing for a truck for awhile Clem Sparks and Psteav have been enabling as best as they can manage. Psteav sent me this on the ole' Facebook marketplace. It was listed for $500 with a blown headgasket. 2001 Frontier 2wd manual 4 cylinder with a claimed 210k miles. Overall not too rough and pretty rust free (for Missouri). Current plan is to repair the engine and drive it. If the engine is in need of more work than just a head gasket then I may take this build a little GRM.
Dang good buy! thats like exactly what I have been looking for recently too!

I really didn't want a giant 4x4. This will hopefully be good truck for many years.
Following, these are cheap in my area.
Well, spark plug 1 hole is full of oil. The oil that came out was really thin, not milky though.

The 2.4L that came before that engine. KA24DE that was used in other cars back to the early 90s.

You mean on top of the spark plug or inside the cylinder? on top of the plug is really likely just a valve cover gasket. Can absolutely cause running issues by screwing with the spark however.

These take to turbocharging fairly well, presuming you keep the boost down around 7 psi or so.
I'm not opposed to that. However, if I am going to need to add engine management and do a bunch of fabrication, I have a 1UZ that will definitely fit and may cost less to install than getting a turbo setup sorted out.
So the inside of the motor is nasty!
Tear down continues. Managed to get the exhaust nuts off the studs without breaking anything other than some heat shield bolts.
The manifold has some good sized cracks in it so that will need something done to it.
The head is now off. Nothing obviously broken on the head gasket. There was fluid everywhere so no easy trail to follow. Pictures in bound. The cylinders look good though.

What's that? You say you need a turbo manifold?

I think I've got some spare injectors that should be "e85" sized...
Im curious how this goes. I have a 2000 frontier 4cyl that i bought new, so had it 20 years now. I have leak stop in it, and its working well, but i have a coolant-to-outside head gasket leak from losing my fan belt and overheating. That will need fixed up and i want to do everything i can while im fixing that. This "easy turbo" idea is sounding interesting too.
It is not happening anytime soon as I need a truck more than I need another toy.
I don't need the two of you assisting in my bad ideas!
However, most of the parts to add a turbo to a 240sx should work on these trucks. The intake manifold is different but the long block is basically the same.
Let me know if you want some brand new in box eagle rods for that turbo build

Damn it.... How much?
The head is at the machinist getting a deck and a look over. He has had it for a week and a half so hopefully I will get a call soon to come get it.
Spent some more time on the Nissan today. Got the front cover off to find this.
This is the right timing guide or what is left of it. This led to the pan coming off. Here is what I found in there. Luckily the crossmember has a removable center section so it only took a few minutes. This is what I pulled out of the pan.
I have a complete timing kit so this was all getting replaced but wow this thing was a time bomb. I hope to be able to whittle away at it over the next week and have it finished up soon
Looks like a fun project! Have fun with it.
