On paper the 1.6T Veloster is a HS class car. The only variable that remains to be seen is that new redesigned chassis & how it handles on a race course. I went back to Ft Wayne last night & took a different route that put me on I69. It appears that car will get you well north of any speed limit pretty fast. Since it's smooth you really don't notice how fast your going until well past 80. I was curious about grip so I took a 25mph off ramp loop. I started into it at around 40 & was up around 55 when I came out. No fuss, car felt fairly flat & definitely could have gone a lot faster. It felt a lot like my ACR Neon back when I use to daily it, My driver gut keeps telling me that the R will be very good on a autox course but the down fall will be the open dif. I do hope Hyundai gave us some negative camber to utilize up front. In a perfect world they will have special "racing" alignment specs in the FSM.
I see 3 potential downfalls
1) open diff
2) negative camber
3) width. Although its width vs. height is a positive to me (I don't like tippy cars), the Fiesta's narrow width will ultimately allow it to slalom quicker... until it ends up on its roof :P
Still, I can work with #1 and #3. I can't work with no camber... thats just berkeleying frustrating. But I haven't really put any effort into checking the limits anyway.
Yes a FSM line entry would be great, but I haven't heard anything about that yet.

Doh. My bad. Yeah, if the Elantra and the FiST are in HS, the Veloster should stay there too.
I wouldn't mind playing in HS with it, but that would depend on how much camber I could get.
What other class would you go for? Seems to be outclassed in anything but HS.
I think the new one has a good chance of upsetting the FiST as the king once someone fine tunes the thing to the letter of the law. It has a lower COG than the FiST and an IRS rear(on the 2019 refresh). I hope they get into the hands of someone who is capable enough to push some fast times. I am quite intrigued at the Hyundai models right now and both the Veloster and Elantra N-Line could be my next hatchback to replace my Fiesta.

Other class? None :P
You are right, it is absolutely outclassed everywhere currently. GS is a non-starter so I wouldn't put forth any effort to run one. If it does get kicked back to HS then I might.
If it had a place to play in ST I would consider that in a few years, but it is hopelessly outclassed in STH.
Back in the fall of 2017 I instructed at a track day event at Road America. They also had a small autocross course in the paddock. I ran the Elantra through a few times--It was tight and the lack of an LSD could be felt there--but was not as bad as I expected. A National level prep/driven FiST was also there and went something like a 29.3 (cold day with 200tw tires). I went 30.7 clean and 30.1 with a cone--I think I could have gotten a clean low 30 with a few more shots. That was all stock--no big RSB and crappy OEM all-season 500tw tires. I'm sure the tires are worth 5-tenths all day long...

So youre saying theres a chance....hmmmmm
And you have the Elantra sedan? I assume the hatchback is probably quite a bit lighter.
I think they are pretty similar in weight.

Yeah just looked and its within a hundred pounds or so. Bummer.
This thing is actually getting pretty good mileage considering my commute.
Still doing appliance things with it. Still haven't looked into camber :(
Will need snow tires soon, so I'm keeping my eyes open for options. I'd like to find a decent OEM option, but haven't come across anything yet.

For winters, I found some 17" Tuscon take-offs on e-bay for cheap. Run Nexxin Winspikes in Wisconsin--it was the least expensive solution to wheels/tires that I could find in the fall of 2017...

Our Daughter Morgan bought a brand new N type Veloster. It corners like it's on rails. Engine started doing weird things. Dealership said it's fine. 3 days ago the engine seized up. Haven't heard the prognosis yet. Crossed fingers applies here.
