Just bought a 1989 S10 long bed. 4.3 4 speed auto. Digital dash and a bunch of other options. PO started fixing it up and gave up, probably because it ran like E36 M3. Hard starting and horrible idle, does much better over 1500 RPM. Vacuum lines are combination of old, cracked, unattached. has been repainted once. Was a work truck for awhile, judging by the ladder rack, but not horribly beat to hell. Seems to have always been a California truck, clean underneath.

Photos to follow.

Awesome! Square S10s are win. The TBI setup is easy and reliable, and the 4.3 makes enough juice to do anything you want to get up to.
You going bigger tires and off-road stuff or AWD transfer case and hitting it with the lowering stick?

My second vehicle was an S-10 truck, and they will always have a soft spot in my heart.  The best thing about them is you can build a whole truck from Rockauto.com for like 50 dollars.

First step is to get it running right and pass smog. Limped it to a couple of parts stores, but no one seems to offer free code reading for OBDI vehicles and I can't find my code reader for the life of me. Guess it's time to get out the paper clip.

After that fix up the interior a little. Dash is decent considering it's 35 years old. remarkably the PW still work. PL do not. Door panels are home-made customs. Steering wheel is a cheap aftermarket that's falling apart. I went to local U-Pull it this morning and got a 4-spoke off a '92  w/ matching Chevy horn button. Only good door panels were on a '82-'85 type interior. Maybe I should have grabbed them but probably better off to wait for the right type. Surprised to see LMC doesn't offer repops on these. Seat isn't trashed, but the cloth factory-looking seat cover is worn thin on driver's side.

In reply to barefootcyborg5000 :

Stockish build. The PO put some generic AT in the stock size (23575R15) before giving up so I will probably run those, at least at first.

Went to get a duplicate set of keys made today, was half successful. Apparently the main key supplier to the big chains has discontinued supplying the blanks for non-ignition keys, if the clerk knew what they were talking about. I was able to ignition keys but better not loose that door key. Gonna half to try an old fashioned hardware store or locksmith.

If anyone in southern CA has the following parts (or has a buddy with these things), send me a PM.

Passenger side door. would be great if equipped w/ power stuff already

Driver + pass side door panels, preferably with power windows/locks. Bonus if blue

Factory am/fm/cassette that works

headliner or headliner backer board

Has become even harder to start. Zero compression on the even cylinders. Not allowed to work on cars at my apartment complex, so had it towed to a place a coworker recommended. Need to find a new job in a place I can afford a house.

On the positive side, found a local place to make a door key. Only $3 since I paid cash.
