Where to start.

No, it's not convenient. Or subtle. Or easy to park. Or good for hauling people. It'll probably break, at least once. But lawdamercy it's a whole vibe, an absolute party on wheels. Every intersection is a carrier launch, every corner is rotation on demand, every downshift a rolling thunderclap.

This is my 2020 LT1 package in Rally Green Metallic, picked it up about a month ago.  6.2 litres of pushrod freedom, 6 speed Tremec 6060.  Only options were 20in forged wheels, NPP (dual mode) exhaust, and sunroof.  Apparently, its 1 of only 42 manual LT1's made in this color.

That sums it up. I wanted a fun, RWD, manual coupe under $30k, and it had to be reliable enough to put up with 10k miles a year. I wanted a V8, but it wasn't a hard line requirement. It just had to make me smile.

I comped the weirdest crap. Everything from 03-04 mach1 stangs to X-runners to S197 bullitts to V6 camaro 1LEs. Even those Jag F-Type coupes. I test drove a Miata ND2 RF Club and loved it, but it was truly impractical. Even considered driving a beater and getting a project car, but a lucid moment of clarity made me realize I was high on my overconfident garbage and I don't have time for that, and didn't want to be miserable every day driving a heap.

Drove a 15 mustang GT and knew at once I had to acquire this power. But the car felt bulkier than I like and I didn't gel with the MT82.  Didn't bother looking at the 86 twins, i've done subaru pancake engines before and thanks but no thanks.

Enter the 6th gen Camaro. I actually wrote them off early. Too many issues with GM build quality, tiny trunk, expensive, you'll crash trying to park because each window is the size of a slice of bread, etc. Then I sat in one. I loved it. It was the just-right porridge. The LT1 sounded like every NASCAR dream I ever had in middle school study hall and the Tremec felt weapons grade. The trunk, with the seats down, is totally fine. The hunt was on.

So I accidentally found out about the LT1 package while trying to find SS cars that were in my price range. Turns out GM took a low feature V6 and shoved the SS drive line into it, with front brembos the base SS suspension, and the aux coolers deleted. That's really it. I'm a simple man, and I like my dailies that way, so this felt perfect.

I found mine listed for 3k under market in Alabama. It was this strange color id never seen, and the miles were high-ish but the dealer had a good rep and the CPO warranty was too good to ignore. Traded my beloved 2010 Civic Si in for it, which in a cool twist of fate got bought by another enthusiast.  The rest is history.

It's big, sleek, and kind of intimidating. Throttle and clutch are soft, I understand why they do that but it's not ideal compared to the motorcycle-fast response of the Si. Body control has too much rebound. But otherwise it drives super nice and I'm still finding out how deep you can stuff it into a corner, even on these lousy 500tw tires. Great brake feel, although it could use better pads. On the highway it's just a missile.

Let's get this out of the way, the windows are small but some adjustments make it livable...I mean I drove it straight through downtown Atlanta (below) with 30 minutes of acclimation and didn't die. But no, I wouldn't want to have to street park this everyday. I think the hysteria's a meme - the ND2 was easily worse checking my 4 and 8 o'clock and the windows remind me exactly of my dad's 08 Audi TT which wasn't such a lightning rod. But, I get why people wouldn't like it.

The engine is brutal. Makes power everywhere, all the time. Im still coming to grips with it. The sound is straight off your local circle track grid.  1800 RPM cruise at 78mph returns nearly 30mpg avg though.  NICE.

The tremec is the best trans I've ever driven. Early morning, when cold, it's kinda cranky. You really have to babysit each gear shift. But when it has heat in it, guys I can't shift fast enough to make it even give me a nibble from a synchro. It's almost a cheat code. Oddly, the higher you rev the easier it falls into a higher or lower gear. It's the least happy when short shifting.  Fresh fluid helped a lot.

The "NPP" exhaust is GM-speak for dual-mode, you get little butterflies that can route exhaust through the muffler or essentially bypass it. It's one of my favorite things and super handy to put it in Stealth mode in the morning, then switch over to Sounds of Mayhem when I get on the main roads.

As far as fit and finish, it's lousy, at least on the interior. That's the honest truth. The door cards groan if you touch em, you can see sunlight around the edges of the sunroof shade. There's something flopping in the wind in the engine bay I'll have to find. The seat fabric is already showing wear. That's the tradeoff.

But I insisted on an extended warranty with this thing and you only go around once so the hell with it. I'm too busy listening to the V8 anyway. I paid $29k with the warranty until 146k miles or 6 years so I think I did ok.

Every car I've owned came to me in a weird confusing multi-path cluster mess that resulted in the car finding me more than the other way around. I think that's just how I am. I think that was the case this time too, and I'm gonna really enjoy it.

That color is amazing. I never realized the LT1 package was a low-trim car with the big powertrain stuff. That's exactly the one I would buy.

The Post-Purchase Cleanup.

Guys I'm pretty sure the previous owner was feral.  This thing was gross, and the paint was hammered.  I knew I could bring it back but let's just say I'm glad its over with.

not cool, man.  pulled it in for a 3 day weekend of nothing but elbow grease.

Day 1.  Undisgust the interior.

This was hidden under the rubber console mat.  I missed it during my time looking the car over but I wasn't expecting this!

I started with Chemical Guys All Purpose Cleaner diluted to 20:1 but ended up tossing that aside and just going after the whole car with lysol wipes.  Yeesh.  I got in there with dental picks, Q-tips, brushes, everything I had.

Progress, though!

Day 2.  Swirl Banishment.

Started with a wash and claybar.  This thing had clearly never been clayed.  That clay went right in the trash when I got done.

wipe down, then started to hit it with the Hobo Freight orbital and my Meguiar's Professional Fine-Cut Cleaner M0216 and yellow pad.  called it a day after that.

Goodnight microfibers,

Goodnight cleaner,

Goodnight vacuum,

Goodnight 6.2 litre

Day 3.  The Polishening?

Finally, we're getting somewhere.  Not perfect by any means but let's call it 85%?  Good enough for a daily that's for sure.

i know this is extremely not-motorsportsing but clean cars just drive better.  its science.

OK so more greasy car-guy stuff.  Let's get 'er some fresh lifeblood.  Trans and Rear End fluid incoming.  Also took the opportunity to install a Skip Shift Eliminator in-line on the trans harness because frankly, the idea of anyone interfering with my shifting joys is borderline UnAmerican and I spend a lot of time going between 1st and 2nd gears in traffic (on a hill) to get on the highway on my commute so you can imagine how Not Pleased I was about being ambushed by this stupid invention.

Nothing fancy, just OEM ACDelco stuff and the skip shift was by....well, skipshifteliminator.com.  Going by the factory "severe use" schedule I was pretty much right on time to change the fluids.  Both fluids looked fine but I like to have a good baseline with any car that's new to me.

NOW.  2 things;

  1. Tremec, you dummies.  Make the transmission fill hole the height of maximum fill. Do not make me have to make a dipstick out of a coat hanger to gauge where 1/8 of an inch blow the fill hole is to avoid overfilling. It took me longer to drain out the inevitable overfilling that it did for me to pump the fluid into the transmission in the first place.  I went from "I've got time, I'm going to get this just right" to; "This is stupid everything is stupid it's just a Chevy whatever close enough".  I also chose to drain the fluid out of the temp sensor plug, not the actual drain plug, because the drain is right over top of the trans crossmember and almost impossible to get to...and then it drains onto that beam and splashes 8 different ways.  Just GM things.
  2. Chevy: jacking points front and rear would be just a super nice and normal thing to do, instead of making only one jack point on each flank of the car, so i have to lift the car alternating from each side which is sketchy as hell.  I truly nearly tipped the car off the jacks at one point.  I picked up these pads from Amazon which help tremendously and fit the pinch welds perfectly.

I also got an alignment, and yeah, this explains why the driver's front had a strangely worn outside shoulder.  I requested specs that are similar to Chevy's recommendation for Camaro's that are enthusiastically driven but not seeing track time.

Thank you!  I had no idea about that trim either, but it really suits me.  I think Chevy did an awful job promoting it.
As much as I like the idea of all that SS Trim racecar stuff on my commuter, its just added complication for a guy like me.  They covered the basics and made it affordable.  I wish it had the rear brembos but that's as much about appearance as anything else.

Kinda fun easter egg; heard on one of the camaro groups the LT1 engines were built by hand at the chevy performance center in bowling green, but only the ones paired to manuals got plaques.

Peeked under the cosmetic fuel rail cover, and there it was, hidden away. Anecdotally it seems this started in 2020 (my build date is 01/20!) because the engines were destined for 2019 C7's but because of the strike, production ended early and they pivoted to putting those engines in the Camaros instead. I think they stopped the plaque tradition in 23.

I'm doing my best to test your work Mr. Good.

I tried to order a ‘23 lt1 in rapid blue with forged wheels and no other options but the dealers local to me just wanted me to buy the cars already on their lot. Admittedly I didn’t push that hard, and now the banks are closed and I have regret. Still a few new 23 lt1’s out there but not my spec...

what do you think of using as a 5 seater with kids? I had a challenger and was able to fit 2 boosters and one baby seat in the back: is the alpha Camaro rear wide enough for such silliness?

In reply to daytonaer :

Aw man, hate to hear that - rapid blue is SO GOOD.  You definitely would have ordered a pretty rare spec but maybe one will be out there on the used market someday.  I've noticed a lot of the early LT1's coming on the market lately with 30-40k miles, probably at the end of their lease terms, which makes sense because I recall hearing that you could lease them incredibly cheap at the time they were new.

Two kids in boosters?  You could "get by" for a while but definitely not with a center baby seat.  The bigger issue as well is the footwells, I'm an average guy but my seat is almost all the way back, so if my son's in the back he sits on the passenger side with the front seat pushed further forward so he has room for his legs and feet down in the footwell.  We are a family of 3 so I can make it work for shorter drives with that arrangement but typically I only carry 1 passenger at most.

Love the color and the noise. How do you like the engine character vs the '15 Mustang? I love the sound of the Coyote so I've been keeping those cars in mind for the next time I buy a daily driver. I've always had something really practical and usually frugal as my daily, but life is short.

In reply to dannyp84 :

I love both, honestly.  The Coyote is a little softer down low but its a monster up top.  It's stronger, internally, as well having been built from its conception at Ford for the possibility it would be factory boosted and on the 18+ models they are perfectly set up for big horsepower with their port and DI fuel delivery.  Its so common to throw a blower on these things and make 6-700 reliable horsepower, I found that there is a whole series of telltales you can look for on a used one to be able to tell if its had one installed at some point, because so many have.

The LT1 is very tractable down low and I feel that it sounds better - more thunderous bass vs the coyote's more shrill brap, not surprising given the 1.2 litre difference.  Even off idle the LT1 is making something like 300lb feet of torque.  It feels very old school raw at times, and I like that hotrod character.  The bottom end is forged but not nearly as strong as the Coyote.  Everything about it feels immediate, predictable, and robust.

Coyotes in the S550 suffer from fragile AC systems in the early years and can have some strange ticking/bore scoring in the 18+ models that nobody seems to know the cause, or true effects of.  LT1's have lifter failure due to weak and heavy factory lifters, especially on higher mileage units that are paired to the automatic as they utilize the Active Fuel Management programming that shuts off 4 cylinders under light load.  They also had issues with fragile oil pumps on the early models.   I'm under warranty for quite a time so I'll address both some day when that runs out.

I have the same background as you.  I've driven, quite happily, sub 200hp sport compact cars for the last 20 years.  An accord, an A4, a 2.5RS, and my Civic Si.  All manual, all 4 cylinder, all either FWD or AWD.  I feel like I did my time and I've been ready for a bit of a thrill for a while now.  You can't go wrong with either car, and to be completely honest, the Turbo 4 and V6 versions of both are totally cool.  I looked really hard at both and to be frank, they'd make incredibly reliable, fun, useful dailies (particularly the Camaro that has the 1LE package) but I had my heart set on the V8.  Life is short, nothing's guaranteed, and as Mad Max would say...."the last of the V8's"

Wow you did your homework! Are the previous gen Camaros with the LS3 a vastly different driving experience? There isn't much cost difference between the two generations if you're looking at 2013 and up, and I've been told the LS3 is a pretty stone simple and durable engine. I know a guy locally who has been reliably spinning his S550 Coyote to 8k rpm after upgrading the oil pump. I feel like it's going to be one of those engines we look back on and realize what we had too late.

I've been trying to absorb a lot of knowledge from forums/videos/groups for the last few months but I'm sure some could chime in here and school me.  The good news I found out is - there are so many choices on the used market and its all pretty well engineered.  Something for almost everyone.

The LS3 is excellent and doesn't have as many achilles heels as the LT1 although it still has troublesome lifters sometimes.  I think most would agree its the best of the LS architecture engines aside from the wild LS7.  Many C6 vettes and 5th gen camaros are well into 6 digit odometer readings with it.  Like you said its more simple and straightforward so less things go wrong.  They can easily make stupid power with a cam and a few supporting mods.

The Zeta (2010-2015, 5th gen) and Alpha (2016+, 6th gen) Camaros are quite different architecturally although they look similar.  The 6th gens are smaller, hundreds of pounds lighter, and have a number of geometry enhancements in the suspension among a million other small things.  Both cars are fast in talented hands, and probably super fun.  I think the 5th gens are slept on, particularly the 1LE and Z28.  I've never driven a 5th gen but, anecdotally, I've never heard of anyone getting rid of a 6th gen to go back to one.  That said, I certainly considered the 14-15 1LE and just found that the decent ones were priced within a stone's throw of a low-option 6th gen so I put that idea aside.

I briefly drove my friend's SS 1LE with the Penske shocks. Wow the rear differential in that car is amazing!

My wife's car got hit recently and the rental we were provided through insurance was a Challenger R/T scat pack. I stole it at every opportunity and she got bit by the V8 bug. She's been back in her diesel Jetta for a month and at least once a week mentions that she misses the Dodge.

Love those scat packs! There's a guy in my neighborhood with a dark red 392 Challenger six-speed..... Sounds absolutely sinister. I couldn't pull one off but I definitely respect them.

The SS 1LEs are incredible considering they come off the showroom floor ready to set track records. Would have been total overkill for me but I'm so glad they exist.

Thanks!  And I'm with you on that.  I made a pact with myself I wouldn't do any black, white, silver or gray.  Blue would have been ideal but I had my eye out for orange and red too!  The green totally snuck up on me, I didn't even realize it existed and thought the car was black first because the pics in the listing were so dark.  Pretty much fell in love as soon as I saw some good shots.

My old trunk organizer slid all over the place and took up half the trunk floor so I decided to mount my stuff to molle panels under the parcel shelf. Emergency blanket, fire bottle, tool kit in the black pouch and meds in the red. The camo bag was $2 army surplus and holds the jump box and a roll of paper towels.

So now it looks like my Camaro has a tactical cargo pants trunk, which I guess is on-brand for the fully immersive Camaro owner experience.  But I did get a lot of trunk space back!

Had to cut part of the molle panel on the left with a Dremel cutoff to clear the little dome light

Also added an additional ground strap, helped tremendously with hot starts (you can see it between the ground lug and the tensioner bolt). Previously it would sometimes only get one full crank, stall the starter, and slow crank until it fired.  Just one of those goofy platform-specific things.
