Miata bits or even turbo Miata bits seem like an easy answer.

Is that the RWD version or the FWD version?

Either way a 2.5 Duratec/MZR.

Can you swap turbo bolt on parts from castoff mazdaspeed3/6 parts? With the intent to get rid of the direct injection parts and go to a megasquirt solution.

A '78 will be rear wheel drive. This is the car that with the RX-7 brought Mazda back from the brink of oblivion. Additionally this thread requires pictures

Here’s a good looking one.

This thread DOES require pictures.

We need some more details, but I can tell you the good old standby- the ford 302 with T-5 transmission- fits well in the RX-7 thanks to Corbin. I am doing my research to see if a Toyota 1UZ-FE with W58 fits as well, and it seems like it does. Do you have a particular combination in mind?

This would keep it in the family as well.  Another thought would be the V6 used in Mazda pickups and Ford Rangers (basically the same truck, just different grilles) but I don't know anything about the performance potential.

Oh god, the Vulcan V6? For challenge price, perhaps.

If a V6, use the Mazda KL ones. I like the idea of the 1.8 liter, but never owned one. There are adapter plates available.

What is your goal? Just get it on the road, road race, drift, drags?

If you need an original 1.3L & trans, I have a few. I also have a worked 1.3 that is SCCA HP legal and one that is GTL class prepped. I've also got axles, diffs, and parts for days.

There is a FB groups for RWD GLC/323's only with some good info. Mostly Aussie and NZ members. There was mention that a KA24E was a fairly bolt in option not requiring firewall mods.

Mazda GLC is one of my go to CL searches. Comes up empty, but I still search for one.  Had one as my first car and would buy one if I could find one close.
