With a intake/carb swap I would look into swapping in a LT1 cam, and 1.6 roller rockers, full exhaust, and the rest of the mods listed you should get you pretty close your intended hp goal and might exceed your tq goal at the wheels, you don't need vortec heads to reach your power goals in my opinion.
Finally, some pictures. Dirty ones at that It is truly "barn fresh"...and smells like it.
Possible names for the project:
Angry Bird
Dirty Bird
Chicken E36M3 (It was in a barn....)
The inside isn't too bad, just smells.
So, was that in the same garage we are visiting tomorrow? This will be fun!
Nope. The bird is in my garage . It came from a different barn. You're certainly welcome to stop by after picking up the Fiat though. It's on the way...
Retrieving parts car tomorrow. This will yield a 5-speed, disc brake rear w/posi, a hood, and who knows what else.
Awesome. After scrubbing down the inside - a good way to absorb smell is with coffee grounds. Take about a half dozen empty plastic bowls (old cool whip containers work very good also-disposable afterwards) and put a few scoops of coffee grounds in each one in different places inside the car. The coffee grounds will absorb smell and moisture - and leave a fresher smell behind.
Got to work today, pulled off the hood, changed the oil, and began cleaning.
Turns out the main smell was a mouse condo in the heater box. Now I know where most of the hood insulation pad went.... Much digging, cussing, gagging, and lots of lysol. With Saturday spent getting the parts car and Helping a fellow board member retrieve a Fiat, I didn't have time to get a battery. Hope to start it on Tuesday now.
Nice...I actually like these old things. Pure 80's America. Should be fun!
Well, 90's I guess...but the designers were still stuck in the 80's.
Did GM solve the 305 soft cam lobe issue by '91?
I'll be swapping cams anyhow.
Hmm... no spark, no fuel, cranks good....to cold to look any further...
Looking forward to seeing it all cleaned up.
Well it finally started and ran today! I have no idea what was wrong, I turned the key this morning and it fired up like it was just parked yesterday. Drove it to the gas station and car wash. Started and shut down several times without an issue. Here it is without 6 tons of dirt and chicken E36M3 all over it.
It's been repainted at some point. Looks ok though.
I feel like I should be made fun of for thinking these are cool, but I still think they're cool.
Nice, I love pony cars.
I've wanted a 3rd gen for quite a while.
That cleaned up very well.
Looking forward to seeing where this project is headed.
Looks like a fun project. I had an '82 Trans Am and I've always had a fondness for this era of Firebird. I'm also looking forward to seeing where this project is going.
still too cold to get outside and work. Winter sure is hanging tough this year.
Are you thinking CMC by chance?

Very nice. That wine red looks classy on there.
I love 3rd gens. My sister used to have a sweet '88 Formula hardtop with the 305/auto. It was pretty quick in its day, and had an awesome tape deck stereo. I can just hear the Whitesnake now...

Dirty bird.
Because this is GRM... and...
Atlanta!
Sorry, can't be bothered to find the Seinfield GRM Meme, but you get it.
Cool project, please put a firebird decal on the hood when done.

No. HPDE 4 / TT. Maybe with a stop at the challenge along the way....
I have the same year Camaro with the 305 engine. I read on thirdgen.org that swapping to a carburetor requires changing the fuel pump. You could try to buy a wrecked 4th gen camaro to get a T-56, LT1 or LS1, and a newer rear end for disk brakes. You could also buy a cartech book on performance builds on manual transmissions like the T-5.
Subframe connectors are highly recommended (I haven't purchased any yet) and I would recommend that after a month of driving your car, get aftermarket rear lower control arms and a torque arm. I have the latter two and they will make a big improvement.
