Well today i was fortunate enough to pick up a real 96 mystic cobra for $1500 bucks. They thought the transmission was bad. Im 99% the throwout bearing us gone. Someone painted over the mystic flat black as im sure they didnt have the money to repaint it. So this will be my wifes challenge car potentially over the 94 vortech we have. But i plan to restore it to its former glory. Its rough around the edges but bone stock and it runs realllllyyyy good.
For anyone familiar with these you know the paint is far from cheap and it used to be you had to prove owner ship of one before they would even sell you the paint. After a 2 hour phone journey i learned the recently basf has released this formula in a few paint lines and can be purchased by anyone now. Im hoping this leads to cheaper prices than before (800/quart). Iam excited for the project thought, despite its flaws.
Oh man, one of my childhood hero cars. I’m excited to watch this.
So, it's kind of a flip flop?
Cool project regardless.

Exactly. A factory flip flop lol
Can i have the supercharged car cheap?
In reply to Patrick :
A few months ago you could have. But ive since gone too far with it already lol. Tubular front end, corbeau seats, tires, msd parts. Control arms, etc.
Ironically i could STILL use it for a budget car as im 80 dollar shy of the budget. But i like it too much and have too much time into it now to sell budget cheap, im sorry.
Was mostly tongue in cheek, if you said yes i'd be fumbling around for something else to grab to make the trip worth it.
That is a diamond in the rough. The Mystic Cobra was a dream car of the high school me. That seem like a great deal for what it is (and potentially will be).
If i could repaint it in the budget what an awesome radwood car this would be. Im hoping and praying basf wont rape me on paint price for a single stage mix.
Experiment trying to remove the flat black to see if you can leave the mystic base? Nothing to lose
Is the flat black from spray cans?
I believe it is from cans. It has flaked off in spots where you can see the mystic, however in spots it is down to the metal and surface rust has formed. Once i get a price from basf tomorrow that will tell me how fast this restoration process will be.
Do you want to buy a complete set of 99 Cobra Charcoal/grey seats? I have a bunch of other interior parts leftover, too.
Nice buy!!!
Nice buy! I have a full set of Tokico D spec shocks struts for an SN95 too: new in box.
Tubular k member also and some other sn95 stuff.... of a SLP loudmouth catback.
In reply to Javelin :
If i cant source some black seats this will be my fallback. I knownthey are close in color but id like to keep this car as originial as possible in terms of appearances.
In reply to AnthonyGS :
Good to know. I might be interested in everything for the right price. As you can see from car above, i am cheap lol. Hardest part is im currently building 3 mustang's simultaneously. My wife hasnt pulled rank yet, but it's only a matter of time...

I work for BASF. We get discounts on some stuff. I don't think paint is one of them but I will look into it and let you know. I work about as far away from the coatings division as you can get, so I am not very familiar with that part of the business either.
If it's going to be a challenge car, why not vinyl wrap it, or have it wrapped? You can probably get a whole roll of wrap for $800.
Nice! That was actually the inspiration for the paint job on my Firebird. I had to use DuPont Chromalusion because of what you said...couldnt buy the Mustang paint unless I showed I owned one. The rumor at the time was that this was the same paint they used to print the numbers on dollar bills. Unbelievably unlikely...but cool reason just the same haha! And yeah...even the DuPont stuff was crazy expensive.

Ouch, someone painted over a mystic car with flat black. I don't care how bad the mystic paint was, I'd leave it alone until I could afford to repaint it properly.

Parts are leftover from a 2019 challenge build that stalled due to life. It's all for sale at good offer to anyone on GRM. If it goes to the corral, fleabay or craigslist I will want more for my own pain and suffering.
I forgot to mention also have MM caster camber plates.
In reply to surfshibby07 :
I have almost all the rest of the charcoal interior, too. Door panels, rear panels, kick panels, sill plates, carpet...
Need to get some leather conditioner on those seats! Before its too late.
Seriously, nice score! Maybe take some lacquear thinner on an inconspicous corner see if that rat rod black wipes off. Then you might be able to compound it off with a rotary.
I've had some luck removing flat black spray paint with oven cleaner without harming the factory paint.

Can't find anything on our internal websites. Seems all our employee discounts are for companies that buy stuff from/do buisiness with BASF. Can't seem to find anything for consumer products.
