It sucks having to try and computer tune around hard-to-diagnose mechanical or electrical issues though, especially with TPI and it's limited ability to do so.

Thanks. I am trying to get the people over at thirdgen.org to help out. I am leaning towards getting an adjustable regulator. They are really just a new cap and diaphragm to put on the old regulator body, but If what I read is true I should be running 43 no vacuum and 35 idle. Hopefully the thirdgen people will stop asking questions and render an opinion by tomorrow so I can order something for the weekend.
I know how things can get over there, there is a wealth of information on the site but also a lot to wade through.
Yes I was able to just search for most of the information to swap from TBI to TPI without replacing the entire harness, with out having to ask any quaetioins, but this one is stumping everyone. I still think the pressure is too high.
The people in the DIY prom section of the tech boards have not come up with anything.(Why do I ALWAYS get the problems no one has heard of?) I am going ahead with trying to adjust the fuel pressure. I figure if I can get it down to 43psi it will be a 6% change in pressure and according to the published formulas a 3% change in flow out of the injectors which will be a change in the right direction. Being cheap.... I mean financially responsible I won't buy the replacement adjusting caps. I will open up the regulator and check that no one has shimmed the thing, and if not make different thickness gaskets to adjust the pressure.
Well S**T. I removed the plenum disassembled the fuel regulator made the appropriate gasket, got the fuel pressure I wanted, re-assembled took it for a test drive and no power. When I got home I removed the gasket spacer and tried again still no power. stopped while out and for a few seconds I heard rocker arm clatter like a mis-adjusted valve but it went away. I am thinking I have a sticking valve or lifter about to collapse. I am parking this one and going to work on the vette for now.
And here ends the story. With some pressure from the wife I put the Firebird up for sale a couple weeks ago. Last night I get a call about it and the guy shows up and likes it so she is gone. The good thing is I might have just made another car guy.
Were you able to get a decent amount for it with a suspected lifter noise? Might be too nosy of a question.
