Yep.  Self inflicted with lots of extra welding reinforcements on the subframe.  I ground the E36 M3 out of it and then used some primer and undercoating to smooth it out.

 

I also bought a stock subframe, because I think I can use one now.

 

Probably didn't mention it earlier, but I raised the engine about .75 inches to clear everything and made new engine mounts.  Looks like everything will clear with a stock subframe, but that is for after I get this thing making elevens!

About your headers....

Where did you find the collectors? I think mine are shifted enough in the miat to block flow. And they make many services impossible. And theyre leaking. So, im starting to think about building new ones. Or running camaro 3.4 manifolds.....

Hmmm...  lemme check.

 

On the racecar I am using 2 stock "front" manifolds and just welded downpipes to them.  On the rx8, I spent the money on actual 3 into 1 collectors.  Lemme see if I can find that vendor again.

 

P.s. I got some more work done on this car.  The clutch master is fully bolted in and the rod was adjusted.

I literally have a few hours of work to do on this and I just can't quite get motivated to finish it. I have no idea why.  

 

I did tear down the engine from the rx7 racecar and diagnosed a spun bearing on the #5 cylinder.  Boo.

 

Already bought a new engine and tore it down too.  Now, I just need to build up the new engine with the old heads once I swap the crank trigger ring onto the new crank.  Fun.

I got the wiper assembly reinstalled.  Looks like it has some gap to the back of the intake.

I welded and seam sealed the cowl where I "massaged" it.  The paint match is "okay".

Got my coolant line that go to the water cooled oil cooler as well as the heater run.  I was out of space so they run over the intake manifold.

Lots of tight clearances for steering shaft, engine mount, oil filter, abs, radiator hoses, and coolant lines.  Nothing touching.  Everything supported.

I'm an idiot...

 

Stuff has been happening.

 

Figured out how to reinstall the front "support bar and battery mount".  I put a large tube inside that fits tightly and also gives me something to weld to.

as you can see, i started wiring everything.

Plug wires.  We'll.  This is where I'm an idiot...  I bought a generic kit that I used on the 3.5 l v6 swapped rx7.

  Unfortunately,  they have the wrong end. I did t realize that until i made them...  so, i cut up a set of stock wires to see if i could steal the end...

Then, I realized they were the correct length as is...  so I ordered another set of stock wires...

 

 

I am SO close.  Just need to stop making stupid mistakes as I near the finish line!

Plug wires are in.

Fluids are being filled.

Wiring is in progress.

Need to bleed clutch, install battery (making mounts), hook up fuel line,and finish wiring.

 

You can see where the battery will live with the intake...

Clutch is mostly bled (need more fluid).

Battery is mostly mounted.  Well, it is mounted, but it moves to much for my taste so I am going to build some vertical stops to keep it in place.

 

I have the starter wire connection I had to order.

 

My buddy and I are in a race.  He is putting a Honda j30 in an older Subaru impreza and keeping the rest of the subi drivetrain (j30 awd manual impreza).  It's a champcar so just racecar wiring.

 

He is just about done with his harness, so it's getting close.  The difference is that I am WAY closer to actually driving mine!

Nope.  He is a gm "master tech" or something and he doesn't take the time to document his wild ass efforts.

Doesn't look much different...

Did a bunch of stuff.  Here are the wires that need lengthened / different connectors.

Mazda ecu back in.  Just 3 connectors to connect.

Shooting for first start and perhaps drive this weekend.

Make exhaust

Fill engine with coolant

Connect 8 inch fuel line

Make rad hose bracket

Make battery and pcm mounts more permantenter.

Tape measure alignment

Make 11s

Go drive.

 

That's the list.

Budget additions:

180$ for a battery

 120$ for exhaust tubing

45$ for wires

$75 for exhaust v bands

 

I think that makes it just over 3200$ all in.  I sold the engine, starter, alternator, some miscellaneous wires/hoses/ac compressor, and Trans (and lost the documentation I had) for 1550$.  So I'm actually under 2000k for all of this.  Nice! 

Sold stuff for more than I paid for the car!

Really enjoying this project. Glad to see it making progress.

I haven't actually tried it yet.  I want to get the car running and driving to increase my motivation for now.  Just taking some measurements and eyeballing it, it should work.  Might need some slight clearancing.
