Wasn't sure what sub-forum to post this in, so I did both

Bit of a longwinded post, what I am really asking below is if I should replace my pressure plate bolts while doing the clutch. TTY flywheel bolts are going to be replaced, but there are also six pressure plate bolts. I don't know if they are TTY, some sources say torque spec is 24 ft-pounds plus 90 degrees, some just say 24 ft-pounds.  Should I also replace these while I am in there?

After installing my brand new clutch onto the engine and tightening the bolts, 45 foot-pounds plus 90 degrees, I decided to learn myself on why these bolts have the extra amount of degrees and aren't just xxx foot pounds. From what I understand, these are torque to yield (TTY) bolts, or stretch bolts. When you tighten them extra, the material of the bolt yields slightly, causing a tighter hold.

This is the first clutch I have ever done, and neglected to do this research before ordering parts. So I didn't realize it is necessary to replace these TTY flywheel bolts along with the clutch. Thankfully my local NAPA has me covered, ordering them in for tomorrow. This got me thinking though, what about the pressure plate bolts? Some spec sources say 24 ft-pounds, some say 24 ft-pounds plus 90 degrees. Is it worth the money (about $50!) to replace these while I'm here? I don't have an issue with not replacing them, unless someone can tell me it is a necessity like the flywheel bolts.  Thanks

Wow, BIG difference between 24 ft-lb and 24 ft-lb + 90 degrees. Can you find a factory service manual to give the final word?

For what it's worth, I've never seen TTY pressure plate bolts, but I haven't seen everything.

My understanding of the bolts that require an additional turn, like some head bolts, are called stretch bolts as you said and cannot be reused.  If you look hard you may see the nonthreaded part is slightly tapered;  fat - skinny - fat.  That's the part that stretches, similar to a Tensile Test.  I just assumed the molecules in the bolt trying to get back where they belong adds a strain that keeps the thing from unwinding.

I've not seen them on a cluch, but if that's what it calls for .......

It sounds like you're doing some clutch work and you're wondering if you need to replace your pressure plate bolts. If they're torque to yield (TTY) bolts, then you definitely want to replace them to make sure everything is snug and secure. Some sources say they're 24 ft-pounds, while others say 24 ft-pounds plus 90 degrees. If you're not sure, it's probably best to replace them just to be on the safe side. It might cost you a few extra bucks, but it's better than having something go wrong down the road.

So, do you like your ankles?  Cause a flywheel coming off after a super awesome mad tyte jdm quick shift is how you lose your ankles.

Not saying it's likely.  However, I have seen it a handful of times while roadracing where the flywheel attempts to cut the drivers legs off when it relieves itself of the bonds of the crank.

In other words, I'd be using good hardware and making sure I have the proper torque values.

I'm sorry if this comes across a bit like im being a dick..

The way this is written seems like a bot.  It's just a rehash of the above discussions.  I am probably just being too skeptical based on all of the AI discussions going on recently.

However, I do agree that the bolts should be replaced if in doubt.

The reason I put a blow-proof bell housing on the 65 mustang I used to drag race.

I agree 100%. Already reported the account as suspect. Other posts fit the pattern as well...we have to deal with ChatGPT-powered stealth canoes now?

Just saw it. Well, I'm real, dude. And I really don't understand why do you think otherwise.
