I have been thinking about the throttle and brake pedals. Hoping for a nice, clean, and functional. Sometimes, this is a tall order. I think I have come up with a solution. I stared at this thing for a while and came up with an idea. So I drew it out on cardboard and transferred it to some scrap metal. Still need to cut it out.( hate this part)

I have had some slow days at work the past few days, so I put myself to good use. I started cutting, drilling, and filing my way to a useful form. I found a couple of matching bolts in my stash to use for the peg part and welded a couple of nuts in the frame. The bolts and sleeves look like I really spent a good deal of time on them, but they are caliper bolts from a mid 90's GM truck. And with all bolted up, I think they look pretty slick. I have welded several tabs on the frame for some sheet metal to be attached. That will come in a later post. But for now I have found that 4 of these need to be cut out as you can see for clearance. They are actually what is holding the pedals upright. And the welds look so pretty too. Hhhh. Thus is hot rodding. I need to cover up all of this bare metal with some etch primer. I have been noticing some surface rust. Usually I am not concerned with it too much, I would just clean up what will be seen. But on this project, I feel like since everything is exposed, it should be held to a higher scrutiny. Etch primer....check. Foot rest templates....check. Looking killer....check. I am at a stopping point for now. I need to get the seat part figured out. I am going to make some copies of the profile view and see if I can draw something out that looks sporty and now like an after thought. But for now this is what I've come up with. I also ran across a mini bike build on youtube that had a smog pump on a Harbor Freight 212cc. The smog pump he used was from a Porsche 912 which is kind of a roots style blower. Any of you heard of any awesomeness? I want to try this after it gets running. I have asked all of the dinosaurs (the older guys that I have worked with I the past) if they had any experience taking a smog pump atart. And the answer was always the same. "Hell no. When it locked up, we through that sh*t in tne trash!"

Man that looks good! Ya iv done some looking into the smog pump blower. There is a good bit of info on them but ya they are hard to find and it just easier to build the 212 or go with a larger motor. But its not as fun as a blown 6.5hp motor I will admit!

Well the 912 smog pumps, in my research, are made of unubtanium. So I turned to the Aisin pumps. found some motorcycle guys have used them. But the cheapest and most plentiful pumps, are the GM and Ford smog pumps. I may end up going with the Aisin pump. It is just on the pricy side for something that may or may not work out so good. I think I am smart enough to figure things out on it, but is it worth it. The devil inside me says yes it is. But it is the unknown that haunts me. And my wife saying "You don't need a supercharger on a go kart!". But it is also what is feeding my curiosity.

Supercharger on a go Kart, how do you know you don't need that. You could be the first, and many my follow.

This is one of the best ideas I have heard of in a while.

Wonder what other pumps could be used....

Cool build. I get requests for kart parts all the time from people trying to build karts but I discourage it because all that effort will be wasted on something they will have no place to drive, but a mobile cooler is practical and fun.

Well, I had thought about using a cooler in the beginning but opted out of that for some reason. The cooler is just sitting on there for height references, and it is at a comfortable level. The motor is going to be where the cooler is sitting. I need to buy a motor still to go much further. I don't want to build the seat too high nor too low.

I have been racking my brain trying to figure out another style pump the could be used but have drawn a blank. I thought about using a newer style smog or AIR pump and rigging a pulley instead of the electric motor. I would really rather stay away from having to have a battery on this. But all I have been able to come up with is a smog pump. I have been doing lots and lots and lots of Google searches for different style pumps, and I am leaning towards a Toyota style pump that has both inlet and outlet pipes. Theses pipes would make it tons easier for routing the plumbing. AND!!!! Most of the ones I have found at local parts stores online have a "limited lifetime warranty". I'm sure a go kart is not favored in this but what they don't know wont hurt them. Is this wrong, probably. But this will be paving the way to greatness! And you can't put a price on that.

Possible pump for supercharger.

My BMW X3 has a electric air fan/pump to help assist the CATS during warm up. The outlet is a hose connection, I wasn't sure if it was working so I disconnected the hose. For a electric fan/pump it sure puts out a lot of noise/air. Not sure how you could remove the electric motor and connect it mechanically but it is mostly plastic so it is light and could connect the hose to the engine easy enough.

Being a little bored at work, I find that go kart progress is steady. And yesterday was no exception. I came up with an idea of making a muffle instead of, what I think is obnoxious, a straight exhaust pipe. I attempted this muffler idea on a previous build and it seemed to work out very well. It consumed quite a bit of my time but worked out very well. In the last muffler build I drilled, and drilled, and drilled, and drilled tons of holes in exhaust pipe. Was not going to do that again, that sucked. So, I ended up running across an old oil filter at work which isn't uncommon. And for some reason I saw the inside and that gave me an idea. Instead of drilling holes in exhaust pipe again, I could use the guts of these oil filters. If memory serves me correctly, they are from a V6 Camaro, 2010, 2012 ish. Anyways, I rounded up a handful of them so I would have extras if I messed up. And with some more spare metal, The process began. I got them all tacked together last night. I need to bend the metal for the opposing side and drill the inlet hole. My hope is that it will be an improvement, and be quiet, and not a waist of time.

So, I was welding on my muffler project and ran out of gas. Shielding gas that is. So I had to find something else to do. Which got me thinking. Almost everything on this thing has been build or made out of plain stock type materials into something of purpose. Why would I stop here? After looking at the new motor that I bought this past week, that ugly and plain looking gas tank looks stupid. It is very functional and adequate, but every Predator motor comes with that very same tank. So, another adventure begins. I ran across a piece of flat sheet metal while looking for something else. Score! Didn't even know I had it. Bonus! I got a rough dimension of about how big I want the tank and traced it out. I have started bending it but ran into a folding problem. I cant bent all 4 sides. Hmmm. That is my task for this week. I am sure I can find a way to do it at work. But here is where I am starting.

I have been doing some research and have found tons of upgrades for these motors. And if the upgrades don't produce worthy gains, I will make the move to the bigger motor. I have to get it moving under it's own power first. And apparently, find a new photo host.

Ok, so it's been a cool minute since my last build post and a tad bit of progress has made. So, since I'm being held back by the man for being a violator to the previous sharing host, I have found a new one so I can continue sharing on this build. Since I am a drag racer at heart, I wanted to stick to the theme. The faux parachute is actually the gas tank. Here is a few snap shots from that process. https://www.flickr.com/photos/105536716@N07/shares/64xLA7https://www.flickr.com/photos/105536716@N07/shares/16Goi7https://www.flickr.com/photos/105536716@N07/shares/6C773Mhttps://www.flickr.com/photos/105536716@N07/shares/qb4L9Xhttps://www.flickr.com/photos/105536716@N07/shares/N7qw09

I need to relocate the muffler due to it being directly under the seat. And since this is all handle fab'd annyways, why stop there! Found some old oil filters at work and took the inner tube out. cut some side pieces and bodu end and I have since welded this all together. I am waiting on some exhaust pipe to comtinue the relocation. 20170619_094547 by Jason James, on Flickr20170619_112808 by Jason James, on Flickr20170619_170503 by Jason James, on Flickr

When I bgot the motor all bolted in and the chain cut to lenght, I found the not everything would clear the seat. The carb and air bow were hitting the seat frame. Some sort of filter was needed the crankcase fumes since the air filter box was installed in file 13. I found some scrap exhaust pipe that i have laying around, a scrap piece of tubing, and some scrap flat sheet metal. I did have to buy some "new" steel wool. I forgot to take some pictures of the inside and got over zealous and painted it before i cleaned up the welds. I can address that later. 20170823_080543 by Jason James, on Flickr20170902_121727 by Jason James, on Flickr20170902_121946 by Jason James, on Flickr
