I'll be curious to see where you put that stuff.  I contemplated the passenger footwell for a bit.

There's not much space in the cabin that's for sure. I need to mock up the seats to see if they can live where I want without extending the engine harness 5 foot.

Care to educate on the $32 battery and terminals? This sounds very optimal for some projects around here.....

Here's the battery which has gone up $2 since my purchase. There's not as much thread engagement as I would prefer with this battery. If it strips out I'll re-tap to an m6.: CLICK ME

And the terminals but I had to use M5 bolts to fit the battery above.: CLICK ME

I've used the same brand battery for about 5 years for various motorcycle projects and my lawnmower. I've run similar from other brands on other cheap car projects and they've managed to work great every time.

No real progress the past week or so. I actually took off Monday from work in hopes to get some stuff done but didn't. Sick kid. Sick/injured dog. Honestly though I just wasn't feeling motivated in the time I did have available.

BUT TODAY I GOT IN THE SHORTENED AXLES!!!!!

They look great!

I have all of the boots, grease, and clamps required to assemble. I'd like to do a dry test to make sure before getting messy though, which I hope to have the time for this evening.

Unfortunately my evening didn't go as planned. My best friend Charlie took a turn for the worse and we had to say goodbye. He's in Doggy Valhalla now with a fellow friend or two. I'll probably spend some time in the garage to give me a distraction. Today though we mourn.

Sorry for the loss of Charlie.  No doubt an awesome companion.  It's been exactly 8 years since my black lab, Bella crossed to the other side.  I got misty eyed the other day thinking about how she rode shotgun for so many years in my truck.

He lived a great life for sure and made a lot of folks lives better by knowing him. Unfortunately he was just a pup at 7 years old, but sometimes you get what you get and just be glad you got to witness greatness.

It was a busy Saturday and then Sunday was mostly spent trying to catch up fleet maintenance. A couple washes, oil changes, and a battery replacement took a good chunk of time. After that was done I got a few minutes to dry assemble the axles. Both slid into place as intended and will bolt up perfectly. The outer boot I used to replace the factory welded one is from a 95-02 4Runner. It looks like it should work great and if you didn't know any better would assume was factory. I also bought some new inner boots but wanted to wait until these were confirmed to fit before I assemble the last time.

I'm a bit surprised to see the angle sloping upward as much as it does. Oh well. Unless it's problematic this is where everything fit up best so no use worrying about it.

Axles look awesome, who made those?

I sent the Boxster axle stubs to Dutchman Axles. They shortened and re-splined one end of each for a relatively low cost. I ended up all told around $210 for both including shipping there and back. They can do all sorts of custom stuff at a relatively affordable price as well. Before sending them in I called to discuss options and they were more than helpful. I highly recommend them!

Last night I was determined to do something. Anything to check off the list would be great. I feel like my progress has slowed quite a bit and the only way to get stuff done is starting something.  I've wanted to start routing and fastening the coolant hoses since they came in but didn't want to rush it. So I told myself to just start it and stop when I need to. At least I could incrementally make progress.

First I drilled the holes through the frunk for coolant hoses to feed through. I didn't have a hole saw for this, so it was step bit for most of it, then a 1/2 electric belt sander took the rest away. I'm really loving that tool. Then I took both ends of the 50 foot roll and fed them through each side until they were hooked up to my connections at the engine side.

I spent about 30 minutes farting around with how or where I'll do my crossover so the hoses connect at the rad on the correct side. I wanted to avoid doing this crossover in the frunk but decided it will be easier for packaging and service work in the frunk.

So then I started drilling, rivnutting, and fastening the hoses down the pan until I was finished. I had to bend some brackets to curl a bit more than others. They look good, and best of all it was finished in one evening.

I was afraid this driver side was going to want to kink on me. The thermostat outlet adapter didn't quite point where I had hoped but it still worked out in the end.

The passenger side was more of a straight shot. I kinda wanted it to curve and fit the tunnel groove a bit better at the rear edge of the floor pan but with the exhaust dumping close by this was just where it needed to go. I'll wrap the hose and shifter cables in some heat sheathing on final assembly. I'll also make a bracket to keep the hose from flopping around by the exhaust.

And here's a look at them fastened to the pan.

A shot of the entry into the frunk. The driver side hose wants to glide over the bottom of the clutch slave bracket. I can shave or notch the bracket for a better fit but the hose can also be adjusted towards the passenger hose to allow better servicing of the clutch system.

Here's me kinda nudging the hose over to the passenger side for more clearance while trying to take a pic. I'll need to figure out a bracket to keep it located in that position.

Another full shot from the front.

Here's a pic of the frunk. I still need to open the holes up larger to fit some sort of grommet for puncture or abrasion resistance.

The hoses want to kink trying to cross them over so I may need to run some elbows to make the transition less abrupt. I was hoping if I clocked the hoses the right direction the natural curve would allow it to make the bends. Unfortunately with both being so close to each other makes that impossible. I'm still deciding how I want to make the adjustments as I want to do the least amount of splicing possible and also use the least amount of space.

looks great!  Stupid question though-  Is there any plan for like impact protection, or just sending it as it is?   Id just hate for something to kick up and cut one and now you're stranded, but maybe that's just the cost of doing business.

In reply to golfduke :

I was worried about this early on, but there are hundreds of water cooled 914 conversions that run the same hose setup. Apparently it's not an issue with this style hose. It's super resistant to punctures and beefy as hell. After working with it a bit I can see it's got a thicker wall than all of the 1 1/4" hose I've used before. In fact I thought I ordered the wrong size when it first came in because the OD is bigger than expected.

So to answer your question, I'm just going to send it as is.

Nice progress! Reminds me of working on the Europa. That car used aluminum tubing inside the center of the chassis instead of hoses, then just some short hose bends to the radiator and engine. But I think what you have here will work great too.

I've contemplated doing a similar setup to what you're describing. Packaging wise it's plausible. I'd need to consider some sort of sleeving or insulation to help reduce radiant heat. It may be something I explore in the future.

Great info, thank you!

Progress is great on the car too, line routing looks good, worst case you go back and cover if needed, but to your point, I've seen many cars with similar routing, if you aren't going to be slammed or doing ralleys, you'll likely be in the clear for years of fun

I spent most of my spare time at work yesterday looking for hoses with bends that could splice into my main coolant lines. Without buying a bunch to test and return what didn't fit I decided to double check something simple wouldn't work for my application. After trimming a little sheetmetal for the radiator to sit where it will reside, I pulled out some off cut hoses from previous projects.

And what do you know, two simple 90ish degree bends worked out great! If I didn't have to do the crossover it would have made things so much cleaner but it's not like I'm going to do much with the space I have available anyway.

Now I get to start the fun task of figuring out how I want to bracket this rad into place. I've seen it done a lot of different ways which means I have a ton of ideas to borrow from.

Right now the plan loosely involves a patch of louvers in the pan of the frunk. Maybe a few on the inner fenders as well if needed. I thought about ducting like yours but decided to try it without first and see how it goes.

Something similar to this will hopefully be enough.
