So, I'm J

Surfed around GRM for a while now but haven't had any substantial automotive endeavors to add to the pile for quite a while. As it has turned out all of this has been rather unplanned but it has been a long time since I have taken a tumble down the automotive rabbit hole so head first I went.

I have had F-250s and GM 2500s for years but always wanted a 1 ton because well, because. When I started looking for F-350s it turned into well it might as well be a dually because, dually. So I started looking at duallys and while spending quality time on the marketplace I came across this picture.

And about 2 hours later I had a 2008 F-450.

Really had no plans to do a whole lot beyond what was already done. But the 6.4 did what 6.4s do and melted #8 piston one day and promptly bricked the truck, yay.

So I did the most logical thing and went back on marketplace and found this picture.

And about 2 hours later I had a brand new F-450.

Which I then used to pick up my other F-450

Then I did the next logical thing and bought one of these

And put it here

So now that they both function

I did the next logical thing and have started taking apart the new one

And that's basically turning a frown upside down.

Nice!

What are the plans for the new truck?

I assume the red truck has the 6.7?

Its a shame the Cummins was only available in the F650 and up - what a nice combo. What trans. did you use on the blue trucks swap?

Yes red one is a 2019 6.7

KC Stage 2 turbo

Exergy CP4

Pusher Intake Piping

Mishimoto Intercooler

DPC Torque Convertor

Bulletproof Diesel Oil Cooler

Strictly Diesel trans cooler

Tuned by SPE

Id like to keep the power around 700 to stay out of the motor and trans as long as possible.

Blue truck is running the factory 5r110. Truck is running the swap kit from Diesel Conversions out of Montana.

Cummins is studded and i'm running a billet 64mm from diesel power source and tunes from motor ops. It's still on stock fuel, when the red truck is back together i'm planning on doing compounds and turning up the wick.

The only diesel I currently have on the road is a 03 F350 FX-4 SRW x cab. Only 140K miles so far, and bone stock.

Did minor upgrades on my earlier 7.3’s, but bone stock 6.0 has as much power as I pushed out of them... the mods I had done were more geared towards longevity.

Im an old fuddy duddy; don’t need that kinda power... but I’m WAY excited for you!

First diesel was an 05 6.0 250 Harley Edition, still wish I had it

Studded, built trans, bigger turbo

I experienced all the woes of the 6.0 and remedied them as they appeared and afterwards it was a fantastic truck.

I don't need the power either but I can never leave well enough alone.

I clicked the link due to "dually"

then I saw your blue beauty and ran over and showed my wife. My exact words "babe look my dream truck - but mine would be the fire engine red one"

I scroll down - BAM you got a red one !!!

I have never owned a vehicle from the big 3. But my dream vehicle is a dually Ford F450 and a Viper. Slight lowering on some Alcoa wheels

But paying $100,000 for a truck isn't in my wheelhouse.

I have had Tacomas since 01. My current is a 2018.

I literally look at dually a like yours with envy in the road. Not that many here

but in my road trips to Montana and Wyoming they are everywhere

someday I will have one. Till then have to live vicariously through you guys

is the engine issue in the blue one common? Is the reds motor different or will be same problems in future ?

In reply to mr2s2000elise :

When I worked in TX, little old ladies did their grocery shopping in dually's. Seriously. Not an uncommon sight. Most you see are of the mall crawler variety, but plenty of workhorses also.

True I have family in Dallas and Austin and am so jealous to see everyone in raptors and duallys

my Tacomas see farm duty. Beat to an inch of their life. Never let me down. Frame rust (Tacomas biggest killer) isn't an issue for me in my climate.

so I use my trucks as a truck. However, do I have a need for dually f450? Heck no. My race car weighs 1980lb and is towed by my 200 land cruiser or my fj cruiser.

havign said all that, my dually f450 would be a mall crawler. Nothing wrong with that. 95% of the time my high priced sports cars see commute duty.

I am ok with that.

I still want one :)

70% of the time a 1/2 ton truck would do me fine. Most of that my old Datsun 620 would do. But I was pullin' a dump trailer for a friend the other day, and last load we knew we were overloading, to not make another trip. I babied it on the way home, stopped at a friend peanut mill near the house (for the scales)... grossed at 26,940 lbs! that was 14,000 lbs of dirt on a dump trailer rated for 9500 lbs! Oops.

There is one guy down here that uses an '01 Lightning as a farm truck.  Most beat to crap Lightning I've ever seen, made me sad every time it came into the shop.

Got the turbo on the 6.7 swapped out

Defintely a 10 pounds in a 5 pound bag scenario but it's pretty straight forward to work on. Up-pipe and Down-pipe clamp took most of the time.

The diesel conversion kit is super nice. I have had dinner a few times with the owner.

I have done 2 6.4 to 6.7 conversions and they are not terrible. It really is the best of both worlds.

Yea it's a nice setup, the 6.4 is known for its power not its reliability and that was the second motor that let go so there wasn't going to be a third time.

The expense of the conversion kit was reasonable enough for the reliability i'll gain from the cummins. The factory 5r110 is stout in stock form, being built with a good torque converter we'll be good to go.

Shame about the 6.4.  If you can keep one running they’ll humble anything out there.  Look at the conn rods for example.  Way beefier than even the 6.7 Powerstroke.  It’s a stud when it runs.
