Three of the four cams seized. Both rears and one front. The cam caps and head were chewed up pretty badly. The cams journals were gouged up and heavily galled with aluminum from the caps and head. All that aluminum had circulated through the motor for a bit too. There was obvious aluminum filings in the oil. Motor spun over OK once the cam belts were removed.

Another brilliant, perverse, blasphemous swap--and I love it.

With Ferrari values climbing (even 308s), it's a little wacky investment-wise and I don't know how much you had to cut it up to get the H22 in there, but in the big picture, who cares? The H22 might be more offensive to purists than a SBC, but you can respond to them that they're both Axis powers.

Post up more info as it comes, please. Great job.

Its an odd project for sure.....it would honestly never occur to me to remove cylinders and displacement from, well .....anything, much less a car I planned to race.  I kind of got the car that started this thread, a goodish car with a dead engine, get it running for not a ton of money.  I get that.   But starting with a fairly expensive good car with a good engine, gut it, re-engine it with a  less powerful engine....it seems a very expensive way to go racing and probably not do real well.  He can ebay a lot of the parts he pulls, but I can't see that making up the loss in value of the car much less offsetting any of the expense to make it a race car....it seems more like the goal is youtube revenue vs an actual race effort.....but whatever the reason, there it is and I'm certainly in no position to have any opinion of projects making sense :)

It's so interesting to me how things in the car world come in groups. Mike at Stanceworks has just recently started K-swapping a 308. K-swaps have taken over for LS-swaps and I won't be surprised if there are a bunch of Ferraris/exotics getting the Honda swap treatment. 

 

Either way - a cool project is a cool project. Nice!

 

EDIT: I see now that this is an old thread! I stand by my statement that we'll probably see more of this kind of thing.

Yes, the economics of Youtube have led a whole lot of people to take 'exotic cars' and do ridiculous things with them because it pays more money to screw them up in some cases then it costs to buy them. I'm vaguely ok with a k-swapped 308 even though it wouldn't be my choice, but honestly the amount of car youtubers doing stuff with 'exotic' cars just because of the clickbait value of the brand name has gotten real old to me. But until the money train actually stops, the videos won't, and if im not buying Ferraris myself it MIGHT just be because im not making a job out of fishing for likes when in reality that usually is the actual ticket to success. Other than who you know, of course. If i knew someone who wanted me to put a Honda engine in their Ferrari, i'd probably go for it. And if they put it on youtube I probably wouldn't be the one who got more money from doing it, in spite of being the one to do it.

I appreciate good craftsmanship and automotive creativity in all forms but to me this totally misses the point of an older Ferrari.  The weird engines with  pretty casting (and what seems to be a different casting for every year), unusual exhaust notes and valve train noises, finicky carbs (or ITB fuel injection) and all the other creative if not really successful stuff that Ferrari did over the years is what makes them wonderful.  If you replace the engine with something from Honda then you've pretty much got an NSX with poor build quality.  The NSX is an amazing car but the experience is totally different from that of a Ferrari.

I guess it depends on what he wants it for. If the owner wants to have a car with Ferrari style that you can drive regularly with reduced engine maintenance this is a great idea. From a power standpoint it has more power in a lighter package and will continue to run, that seems like a plus. It is still a Ferrari (regardless of what the purists say) so when you roll that car into your local Starbucks you are still a mega boss. Having never driven a Ferrari and having no prospect of doing so I can't really imagine the impact on the driving experience. My belief is that the visual experience is key and that car in stock form is probably outperformed by some 4 door sedans you can go buy off the lot today.

 

PS- I know its a zombie thread but a really cool one...

I get the builders' motivation, and these projects sound like heroic efforts, but the thought of a 4 cylinder Ferrari street car makes me a little sad.
