After years of sitting on the sidelines interested in starting a challenge build I'm finally starting a challenge build of my own. I have a few items left over from failed previous builds that get too expensive as I completely destroy my budget.
I found the first major piece though. A worthy shell. Picked up a 01 GT with "engine knock" for $600 yesterday. Will try to update this thread as I get parts and things progress.
That's a good start. Keep the updates coming.
Good looking car for the price!

Thanks. It's an ok 10 footer (where these pics were taken). Lol.
the hood paint is completely peeling off and hood is cracked. Front and rear bumpers have paint peeling from bad respray, but for the price I can't complain.
Can we vote on what nonLS engine to put in it?
bad title I guess. It was meant to be sarcasm. lol. Its getting a 4.great ls and 4l80.
I found a 4l80e locally for 350.
I'm off to a good start I think.
That is an awesome find for $600. I will have my AR5 and adapter kit with correct length driveshaft coming out of my car soon if you wanted a 5-speed. You will probably have to do some trans tunnel cutting to get a 4L80 in there with a correct pinion angle.
I can also tell you stuff that won't work if you need help, lol.

I know! It was a younger guy and between the rod knock, bad window motors and ac not working I think it was too much since it was his daily.
Thanks on the ar5 offer. I alrady found a good 4l80e for $350 so Im just going to go automatic and focus mostly on the drag portion.
Hurray! More LS Mustangs! (Not sarcasm, I love them lots)
If that is your plan just find a diesel turbo, flip the manifolds and BOOOOOST IT!
I might also be able to hook you up on the driveshaft if it's close to the same length. I think they both use the standard GM 27 spline.

4L80E can autocross as well. Don't fool yourself. Depending on gear (look for 4.0 Ranger Locking units at Pick and Pulls with 3.55/3.73/4.10 for dirty cheap fun). Put the trans in 2 at the line let it shift on its own and have a blast.

I found a 4l80e locally for 350 and a complete 4.8 ls with accessories, harness, pcm and fuse box for $450.
I'm off to a good start I think.
If craigs ads 'round here are to be believed, you can flip those parts and car for about 4 -6 grand!!! I remind folks all the time that asking price is not the same as selling price, but EVERYBODY'S asking prices here are over the top. unless its something I have to sell.
Nice score on the car.
I would try buying a cheaper engine or waiting till you get stuff cheaper and then swapping cheaper stuff in. We were able to get a 5.3 longblock with coils, WP, intake to oil pan with the wiring and ECU for $160 at the local PNP on a 40% off holiday. That's a huge chunk of budget.

Damn that's awesome! and I thought I was doing good. Lol. I'm going to using the stock harness, pcm and all accessories it came with. $800 is a big chunk for engine/trans but I know I'll be able to recomp the car of the car with selling the stock exhaust alone.
The 4L80 is one big girl!
just recouped the entire price and then some of by selling the catalytic converters!
