Free is GOOD !
Zero budget impact.... Nice
Sorry we did this the other week but I didn't put it up. We've decided to make a budget on the last couple of builds that way we know what we're getting into. On the Ranger build it meant we couldn't do the build. Better to know going in than once you get to far in. So proposed budget for the 2002 is:
1974 BMW 2002 $800
Parts BMW $Free
Parts Saturn $400
T5 Trans $145
Flywheel $17
Clutch $10
Rear Different $60
Driveshaft $20
Paint $50
Drag tires $150
Intercooler $35
Fuel injectors $40
Total $1727
There's a lot of room in there. For example all the parts prices are the normal you pull it prices. We can hit half off days or all you can carry days to significantly lower those cost. I'm also hoping to get the Saturn cheaper. Lastly notice that I didn't list any recovery.
Warning Engine Porn ahead This is my Saturn LLO This is me touching my Saturn LLO. Quick post because we're hungry. More details coming.
Few days ago I parked at a customer's house. Across the street I notice a Saturn SC2. Go to knock on the door and the guy is walking out. Ask him about it. He says he wants it out of his yard. I say that I want it in my yard. We make a deal for $150. I'm happy cause that's $250 under what I budgeted. He's happy because we got it out of his yard today and put $150 in his pocket. Asa started searching it for change before we even got it on the trailer. BTW ... Anyone know how to bypass a Saturn ignition?
Looking at this wiring diagram it appears that if I apply 12v to the ING/INJ 15A fuse (top 1/3 from left) and then the normal momentary 12V to engage the starter I should be good right? Of course the normal don't do this at home because you're bypassing all the safety/security interlocks by doing so.
I'm way late to this thread. The idea is to adapt a DOHC Saturn motor to the T5 trans and stuff that into a 2002? Why choose the Saturn motor?
Lol it's been so long I said "Oh a 2002 build thread" before I realized it was my car now. The reasons behind the Saturn is light weight, low cost, and aftermarket support. The only cons I've come up with are low rpm limit and have to adapt to RWD.
Well this will be interesting to follow.
They are certainly light. And cheap. Aftermarket support is almost non-existent.
But sounds like you are comfortable enough with fab that it wont be a problem. A megasquirt and a few turbo plumbing parts is probably all you'll need to crack 200whp (for a short period of time). If you want to go a little nutty you can mix and match parts from different years to get some more gains.
You pics don't work, but out of curiosity, what year motor do you have?
I have a 2001. Now in full disclosure my projects are always in a state of flux during planning stages. My current Challenge projects are $50 Q45, Project X, and this one. My current gut feeling is the Saturn will end up in Project X as a full $20xx build. I think we'll end up running the Q45 for this year and next at half budget with the BMW replacing the Q45 at half budget later.
And yes I have a lot of pictures to fix.
FYI you may want to grab a pre-99 motor. Heads flow better and have more room to flow more better. Also the ringlands are thicker so they handle boost better.
Garaithon asked me about this thread since I'm GRM expressing some parts for it. Might as well bring it back to the top after a four year coma.
I'm picking up a M10 and trans from irish44j in a couple of weeks. A couple of years ago I picked up a cheap EFI system from alfadriver. That combined with the free turbos from Garaithon means possible half budget Turbo 2002. Think we'll get it running NA carb first. As normal don't expect anything to happen fast.
Stampie, I do hope Asa gets to enjoy this as his first car! But, if you ever need to get rid of this thing, please let me know.
In reply to Lof8 - Andy :
It's more of he can have it after I die thing now. I think you're third in line after him and another GRMer.

But I've had several cars?
(Yes, I know his kid's name)
Looks like a fun project! You going to run twin turbos on the m10?! I have a Turbo Dodge exhaust manifold you can have too. It has the right flange to mate to these turbos. It's cast but I'm sure you can weld it somehow!
In reply to garaithon :
I'm gonna have to figure out which one works best. I'm thinking for Challenge I'd do a log manifold out of free scrap I have laying around.
When I bought the 2002 it came as it ran in the Challenge but minus the engine. Today Lil Stampie and I got to meet irish44j and corrected that situation.
Sorry for the crappy picture but we waited until we got to the Airbnb to take one.
The engine came with a complete FI system and was running like a month ago. I think it's best that we change out our fuel pump and just go FI because future says turbo.
Why yes I still have this. I did a trade with NorticSaab a while ago where he got the three M20s included in my purchase and I would get a M10 to be named later. Today I picked it up from him. This will be a 2 liter vs the 1.8 I got from irish44j. It also has the correct oil pan for a 2002 body. Think this will be the engine and the 1.8 will donate FI parts and maybe a trans.

Good to see this come up again :)
What's the car's state after all these years?
I've done my best over the years to try and convince him to use the LLO, but alas, I don't think he's been listening.
We've definitely gotta talk more about the Bimmers.
I've owned several Beemers (still have most of all three) but never 4 wheels!
I guess I should update this a little. NorticSaab and I traded the M20s he sold me for a M10 he had. I think I'll put that in there and maybe turbo it.
You'll need to log in to post.
