I know almost nothing about the guy except he exists. Guess I'll try to find Crank this weekend.
My notary friend was a radio DJ for many years, and did a stint on a country station early in her career (early 90s?). On the drive there she said he made it tolerable at least (she's not a country fan). And her on-air name was Susan Steele if anyone knows old Dayton radio stuff.
I tested the key in the doors and hatch last night, passenger door needed some white lithium grease but all function. Sunday is supposed to be good weather, might call for a drive, although I need to check the tire ages.

I did a quick search while bored at work. Amazon showed a Tuff set for $40, Rock Auto had a couple choices cheaper. But when I looked at extended/closed dimensions they were very different. Guess I need to take a few measurements this weekend.

Saturday I got the title and decided to try Historical plates for a change. I figure if I'm ever going to own a "historical" (not just older) car, this is probably it. Taped the temp tag in the window until they mail the real plate.
Did a few little things: emptied the glove box of crap, kept a bit like the tools to adjust the coilovers & some random electrical plugs, scraped an old ASME decal off the windshield, replaced a few small lightbulbs that weren't working well with LEDs. Figured out the mirror adjustment (switch is on the center console) but apparently doesn't work. I didn't feel like digging into fuse boxes or anything so I added blind spot mirrors to the outside edges. Good enough.
I measured the hatch struts, fully open is 30" and the strut itself is 16.5" so I can do a little searching for something that fits. I used my grandpa's old cane to hold it open, just like my old 93 Eagle Talon in the late 90s when they died on me.
I almost drove it to work today but didn't feel like playing Car Tetris this morning. Drove the BRZ (going to be almost 70F) and maybe park behind the Crosstrek tonight, leaves space to get it out of the garage tomorrow morning. But with impending rain, do I trust the wiper blades? I should test them out, I know they work but don't know the condition and apparently no washer tank in the car.
One of the very first things that I do when I buy an old car is change the wiper blades. Saving $30 is not worth the aggravation of scraping up a good windshield.

Rainx website won't connect because of "security issues", Goodyear says "Sorry! We currently do not have any matching products for your vehicle." And Google shows 17 - 18 - 19 - 20" sizes depending on where I look. Awesome. (Although I think it's 19" driver and 17" passenger, without being able to measure)

In 98 as a hs senior I bought a 92 gts. I LOVED that car. It was red with 5 star alloys. What a great car.
I called the KOI across the street from work. They did some looking and said it looked like 19" and 17" wipers, I asked if they had them and they said yes. Told them I'd be over shortly.
Holy E36 M3. After waiting forever for 3 different people to look up from their phones, the guy I talked to on the phone helped me. He walked back and forth to a rack 3-4 different times, finally came back with 2 packages that looked like they've been there since 1990. Yellowed & taped together, almost. Both were falling apart still.
I mentioned I hoped the adapters were still in there, he ignored me (or it didn't register in his brain). I did a little digging (wasn't hard, they were mostly opened) and found the one package had adapters, the other one had one adapter that wasn't what I would need, and the box that said PIN ADAPTER was empty.
I showed him the empty box (I had to hold it up to eye-level) & said this was going to be a problem. By now another person got involved (mgr maybe), they both went back and forth a few more times. Finally one of them decided to open another package and look, after opening 3 packages he dug out what looked like what I might need.
At this point I already had my change in my hand to just get my $20 bill back. But 2nd guy got on a computer, didn't see any in another location, and said to try what I had in hand. He was already ordering one from the warehouse & would be here in the morning if needed. Which doesn't help a rainy commute but ok.
So I either have two new wipers or I have my $20 back tomorrow. At least I can walk there.

I don't know much about his singing but Dwight is a hell of a good actor and had teamed up with Billy Bob Thornton on more than 1 occasion. Sling Blade would be his most famous role I guess - where Billy Bob killed him with a lawnmower blade.

I've seen Slingblade but it's been awhile, might need to rewatch with some french fried potaters, mm hmm. I did watch Crank last night, Hulu had it for free with annoying commercials. It was ok, had it's moments.
Looking at tires at work yesterday made me wonder if it was worth it to go up to 16" for more choices. Someone recommended Pirelli P700-Z in 215/50-15 to be period correct. Tirerack is out and like $280 or something, no thanks.
Now I wonder how this car wound up in Ohio. Yoakam is from Columbus but I haven't heard of him living here for quite a while. And obviously Long Beach is a long way's away. Toyota's eastern U.S. HQ was in Georgetown KY (before the aforementioned 2016 Plano TX move) which isn't far from Ohio.

I've put a few pieces together. After the race, the car ended up at some point at a car dealership in LA. Might have done the usual driving school duties, not sure (most did). After sitting at the dealership in a sad state, they posted it online & I believe either my seller or a seller before him bought it here in Ohio. Someone here did some work to it, I know my seller was the one that added the full interior & side glass. Other stuff was refreshed I believe.
I'm actually trying to do some research and get more history. I'd like to find out more details like exactly what decals it had, which wheels it wore in the race, etc.
I drove it to work yesterday, 1st time since bringing it home. It got stuck in reverse in the driveway, I did kinda jam it into gear (the 944 requires a heavy hand for reverse) & heard a weird noise. After a bit of moving around and force, it went into neutral, then other gears like normal. One time in city traffic it did feel like it only went partially into 1st, thinking the cable might need some adjusting, or something minor. It has a REALLY long throw, wouldn't mind a shorter shifter.
Brakes had some pulsing, probably get an oil change soon and have them look everything over. But otherwise it's a hoot to drive. Revs really quick, feels like it weighs 900# and just wants to go. Takes nothing to break traction but then again 7yr old all-season tires...
Our long-time UPS driver said of all the cars he's seen me buy (he's been our driver for awhile & brought more than one Tirerack order for me) this is his favorite.
The rear hatch struts I ordered on Amazon showed up yesterday, that's Sunday's project. Based on measurements I took they SHOULD fit.
They fit.
And the historical plates arrived.
I tried contacting Toyota to see if they had any information they could share. Photos, specs, list of equipment, etc so I could try to make it as 1990-race appearing as possible. But after some back and forth emails, the only thing they could offer was the build specs/options for the original car build, and a couple simple articles saying the race was happening.
I found a photo of a car from 1991 that looks like it was on display, maybe pre or post race, that will probably help check the decals on the side at least. Maybe the wheel choice.

Yup, saw all of those. Also the BaT listing from November had a lot of photos as well.
More Google found a few photos from what I believe are '91 and '92, which used the same cars. So I'm guessing at least the liveries are the same. I can see my sponsor decals are correct, at least the bottom photo (I think the seller redid them from when he purchased it) and apparently they used these wheels in the race. I was definitely curious if they used aftermarket but I guess not.
In that case I think I'll keep the wheels and just go with new tires. The BFG white letters should look 1990-tastic. I'm missing one center piece and if I can't find another I might just remove the other three.
