Miata's are a dime a dozen here but I figured I may as well start a build thread since I already took the wife faction hit and admitted to buying a car. The car in question is a 1999 NB Miata. Orange however appears to be repainted from black and originally based on VIN Emerald Green. 144k miles run and drive has passenger door and quarterpanel damage and possibly something with the front fascia. Manual trans, power windows. Will know more once I go and pick it up.

Mine for 1200 bid

Charges and Payments: 10/23/2017 SALE PRICE 1,200.00 10/23/2017 BUYER FEE 415.00 10/23/2017 INTERNET BID FEE 49.00 10/23/2017 GATE 59.00 10/23/2017 BUYER PAYMENT 1,723.00

As far as I can figure because I put my deposit into copart using a credit card vs a bank transfer my funds were considered unsecured. This meant I paid 65 dollars more on the buyer fee. If I rent a truck and trailer to go pick up the car its going to run me about 150 bucks. The downside is copart is only open M-F 8-4:30 which means taking a day off of work. So I have to ask myself if the day off is worth 200 bucks more or so (approx 350) to just have the car delivered to me in Raleigh

The funny thing is that was literally my max and I would be in less trouble with my wife if I didn't buy it.

Car arrived today, I went ahead and paid shipping because of their hours would have meant time off work.

The passenger door works fine, the power windows work but it has a hard time going back up unassisted. Its pretty well scraped.

The passenger quarter panel has a couple silver dollar size holes in it.

Car is actually a 10th anniversary edition according to the title. It has the Nardi wheel. It runs and drives fine has oil in it, coolant. Top has a couple patches but is in reasonable shape its glass window with defrost. No rust that I could see when it was on the truck, it needs tires they all look a bit dry aged

The paint is terrible. It almost looks to me like it was owned by someone who cared for it then got sold to a kid who painted it orange crappily and got in the accident being stupid the car was sold by USAA

The fact that there's orange duct tape on the front fascia tells me this thing lived a hard life before it was totaled. Cool pickup though interested to see what you do with it.

It can't be a 10AE because it has the 5 speed. So not sure why the title says that. There is a piece missing under the front bumper skins orange tape. Local LKQ got a 99 in recently I might be able to scavenge parts off id I wanted to replace the door/bumper skin

Why is the buyer fee so high with copart?

Well I realized why after the fact. They have essentially four fee schedules, business or individual and secured/non secured. Because when I put my deposit in to get bidding power on a credit card its considered non secured. Had I had it set to my bank I would have saved 65 off the buyer fee. If I was business AND secured the fees would have been over 150 less. And then I paid 350 or so for shipping because it was 150 to rent truck and trailer but I would have to miss a day at work and I already was out monday

I have a better condition bumper cover and door here in Albemarle if you decide to go that way.

And a ton of other parts.....

Miata auto-windows sometimes need a cleaning/regreasing to help speed up their functioning... iirc.  should be a "how to" somewhere around

In reply to Dusterbd13 :

Cut the passenger quarter panel off the parts car for him and you can turn the parts car into a Miata-kart.

For now I just took a nice big mallet and made sure there were no sharp edges.

Yeah I will pull the door cards and probably lube up or look at the window stuff.

Going to fix the airbag blinky light and find out what the CEL is. I am going to guess its going to be like an o2 sensor or something.

Should I pull the valve cover (which I guess means a new gasket) and take a look at the timing belt?

Eventually I want an airdam anyway so maybe the bumper skin doesnt matter?

for the first few events, I might be inclined to slap on some OE Grey Duct tape, and some vinyl that says:
"prone to bumpdraft" around the hole

wink

otherwise, the damage is higher up than most airdams connect, so might be a good piece to practice on... but it's still going to need some work, I think

Check to make sure you actually have airbags and a clockspring. Ive seen these with the shell of the airbag put back over.

I am guessing it doesn't, and that is why the light is on because it has a nardi wheel. Yeah I may just glue/tape cover the hole on the bumper for now. Need to get it street registered and find out if I have to put it through inspection which means finding out the CEL. My guess is 02 sensor or something dumb

If you wind up needing a nardi bag, git ine here.

Make sure you research drive cycle for the obd2 pids. Took my 2000 forever to set them all.

Its to set the readiness monitors (pids). You know how the inspection guy will say to go drive more? Thats what hes talking about

Got my parts today to hopefully address the MAP sensor CEL and the Airbag light. When I started it up tonight it was dark and it screeched real bad. This went away by the time I could turn the corner to go around the block. This is the first time I drove it at night could it be something with the alternator? I got it to happen again by turning on the AC but it eventually went away even then

Also no sign of fluid leaks under the car but I did notice what looks like some weeping from the valve cover gasket and on some of the stuff over on the side of the engine. Indicative of anything I should be concerned about?
