A little more progress. 

Managed to finish modifying the MCs, to allow for the required pushrod angle. 

Got them all back in. 

Bolted the front clip subframe in. 

 

Then I made brackets for the actual floor to be mounted to. 

 

 

The plan is for these supports to be receivers for Dzus fasteners. The finish floor (with grip tape on it) will sit on them, and on a frame tube. Weatherstripping,  or similar foam tape, adhered to the underside of the floor will act as a sound insulator. 

Looks awesome.  Keep at it!

Thanks Scott! I kept at it until after midnight. Both the progress and the quality of my work are better than satisfactory. Taking the day off, to spend with friends who are family, and then hitting it for two more days.

Went to my friends’ (read: selected family’s) place for Christmas, and came home with Porky pieces. I used the lower floor that I cut out, to keep as much original material as possible, as well as some age appropriate patina. 

Came home, and worked on it until 1:00. 

Excited to get back into it, today.

Panel gaps, so far. Going to make them a tiny bit better, but I’m generally pleased. 

 

What's up with the little tab/cut out?  You picking up a mounting point there?

berkeley YEAH! And done. Although my spine may not forgive me, for a while, it’s totally worth it. 

Scott, I’ve supported both panels, and fastened both panels to one bracket below.

Oh yeah, I also rebuilt the steering quick disconnect, which had century old filthy grease in it.  

The plan is to start on the exhaust work tomorrow.

After pulling the right side exhaust, I noticed slop in what I thought was the Heim joint. After installing a replacement, the slop was still there. 

Turned out, that the bolt had too much shoulder, and not enough threads. Cut more threads, added a shim, straightened the tabs, reassembled, . . . ZERO slop. 

Oh yeah, and the front bodywork is back on.

•mount steering wheel

HA! 

Yeah, not only do all of my projects suffer from my optimism, but this thing really has been neglected beyond where I thought it possible. 

To be honest, your pace and quality of workmanship have helped me a lot, because I am totally amped up to jump back on my M project, which I expect to be berkeleying MONSTROUS, when done. Maybe not to a lot of people, but it’ll be the quickest and fastest thing I’ve ever driven. Hopefully with handling and stopping to match.

They were cast by Louis Santaniello. The engine builder said he lost my original set, but I later discovered that he dropped the engine on them (minor damage to a head). 

That wheel, tire and sidepipe package does it for me.

I’m pretty proud of the rear wheel arch, too. At the back, it’s open, to help aero.  

 

They’ll have a 1” flange, where they’ll be riveted, similar to Alpine A110 competition, Alfa GTA, and contemporary Group 4 and Group 5 cars. 

Visually, it’ll help to integrate the flat plane of the rear fascia with the curvaceous shapes of the rest of the car. As it was, that part of the car always felt unresolved.

But this is a story about Porky.

It dawned on me, that I’ve been showing my work, more and more often, without providing the contrast of what was done before. 

Here’s a visual on the contrast.  

•The tubes are too small a diameter to let anything over a factory 650 twin breathe adequately. By all accounts, this is a race prepped 2.5 boxer. 

•At full droop, the axles smashed the tubes, adding to the restrictions, and presumably reacting into the transaxle bearings in a less than positive way. 

•The welds at the flange weren’t continuous, leaving holes around the circumference.

Well, the little Porker has a new pair of holes in the ass end, AKA  a s s h o l e s. 

Pipe turned, just as I was tacking it, and now it's asymmetrical. They're only temporary, so no big deal. I'll revise them after running the engine through Pipemax, when tuning for max power.

Thanks Scott. Tonight I’m going to try to work the air bubbles out of the shocks’ reservoirs, per Koni’s instructions, reassemble the coil-overs, and install them first thing in the morning. 

After that, here’s what I think is left: 

  • Reinstall / charge battery 
  • Drain / replace fuel 
  • Bleed brakes and clutch 
  • Check / top-up lubricant levels 
  • Lube all new Heim joints 
  • Connect throttle cable 
  • Set front end toe-in 
  • MAKE NOISE! 

Then, I still have to make a new mounting point for the in-cockpit front sway bar adjuster, get a fire system, roll cage padding, driver’s suit, boots, gloves underwear, and eventually, a fuel cell. 

After that, TVR!!!
