Hello everybody! My sons 9 and 11 raced indoor karts for a few years and did very well but wanted something faster. I have autocrossed a few times and thought they would enjoy it. Last winter I bought an old dirt circle track kart to modify for SCCA JB. This Kart has an old Raptor engine running Meth and hadn't run for a about five years. Things got in the way and I only really got to start on it a couple of weeks ago. I tried to get it to run on Meth but couldn't get it started. I kicked around the internet and found I may only need to change the jet to get it to run on pump gas so that's what I did. It took a while but it started. With a circle track 68 tooth gear it was fast!

The work I have done so far:
1. Changed out the Jet 2. Got it running 3. Changed gear to a 60 tooth and shortened the chain 4. Moved the Right rear tire out to the corner 5. Repaired throttle cable 6. Repaired brake rod

Need to do: 1. Get body work - Can't find any used body work anywhere 2. Replace brake lines (Plastic!!) 3. Install redundant brake - I have no idea how to do this and can't find any information anywhere, even pictures. 4. Install used "Red" tires I bought for $25 5. Find or build 6" pedal extensions for my 9 year old 6. Tons of odds and ends

I'm trying to do this on no budget until I know the boys will like Solo.

Any help will be appreciated !

Watching eagerly. Have grandsons ages 5 & 3. The 3yo is local. Thinking about being the bad grandpa and get carts for them. But then I'd have to get a pink one for my granddaughter, age 4.

I would contact the SCCA home office and get your hands on the FJB carburetor restrictor. They were very helpful, this is one of their ways of growing the sport and they want everyone to have a "family friendly" experience.

My son is almost 10 and he is hooked. Just like his dad.

I was going to contact them about the brake requirement, the Raptor engine doesn't require a restrictor like the World engine does. Do you have pictures of your redundant brake set up? Thanks

No pictures but, the "redundant break" is a cable that mounts in parallel to your existing "hard" brake line. The system is a "pull" to apply pressure, the cable is just a back up. I can shot some detail pictures this weekend and send them Monday.

My next chore on the kart is to hang the extra 45lbs to get it up to the 310lb kart driver/kart minimum. I would love to workout a quick release to not have to shlep the 180lb kart plus the added lead.

This is his second weekend and is still learning, on OLD tires. A fresh set of the speck MG "red" tires is going to happen, just means more PBJ's for the old man at lunch.

Any pictures will be appreciated, one thing I realized today is it is LOUD! I will need to get a muffler for this thing.

The brakes look to be MCP, you can get those parts fairly easy as they haven't changed it much, MCP Comet kart sales

Thanks, I've bought from Comet before, they seem pretty reasonable.

Dont know much about karts, but be careful with the pedal extensions. I heard something about an incident with tragic consequences from a set that failed (I think it was a rotational failure).

Keep us posted! Always fun to see someone catch on and kids can have so much enthusiasm.

So, I'm trying to get these 5" tires on the 5" rims and I cannot get the inside bead to set. I've read that the outside bead is a bit larger than the inside bead. I've used silicone, soap and even grease nothing works. It holds air but will not pop to the edge of the rim.

Grease it up, inflate to max PSI and hit the tready part with a hammer? (seriously, the shock might make the bead move and to where it needs to be)

EDIT I AM NOT A KART GUY AND AM ONLY GUESSING

What type of tires are you using? unless they are oval/dirt tires, I have only heard of 4.6, 6.0, or 7.1 tires.

I didn't get the kart 100% for the karting school but it ran great. We still have work to do until the next outing next weekend. I did get the tires to seat tonight, I wasn't putting in enough air ! The tire says 4 bar max, it didn't give psi and I finally looked it up and 4 bar is 58 PSI. It's such a small tire I didn't think I was supposed to put so much air in it.

Everyone at SCCA NER Karting school was very helpful I'm glad we weren't the only ones with an incomplete kart and no idea what we were doing. We have a bout a dozen things to do including the body work which should make it look like a proper kart.

Boys absolutely love it and had a blast.

Love the hi-tech pedal extensions!

Have been trolling the interwebz for a cart to get the boys into it. Have to work out the scca portion of the rules to see how I may be able to use the cart as dual purpose. Boys are 5+6 which should be plenty of time to turn them into an F1 driver...

Still amazed MRS84FSP gave the green light on this one - I must have been a good boy.

I bought proper $60 pedal extensions that didn't work so I made my own and they're more stable not to mention biodegradable!

This is as it is now, we are registered for Sunday and should be a lot of fun. I am concerned that when we changed the oil I found bits and pieces of what I think is the oil control ring, and it was very low on oil. We did run it for a good three hours straight. I have a spare engine I will be rebuilding for the next Autocross day.

In reply to mbruneaux:

Apologies for resurrecting an old post. I run a oval kart and we use an adjustable tire band to set the bead. There around $60-$70 and you can set the Cir. too.

You'll need to log in to post.
