So what we've proven between us, based on a sample size of two, is that 986 transmission fail no matter manual or auto.  Therefore my next Porsche needs to be the best of both worlds and I'll get a PDK!

Sorry for your bad luck, but trust me I understand.  BTDT.

Shop just called me. No problems with the clutch/flywheel, any of that. The problem is in the transmission itself. They put the trans on the bench and turn it, and you can still hear the noise.  So, they are going to re-assemble it as little as possible to get it rolling, and I'll pick it up.

Can you get over and see/hear it for yourself before they put it back in?  Not doubting the shop, just thinking that it would be good for you to experience it with them there.  You might pick up some tips.

Local shop that's done diffs, R&P replacements, fluid flushes, and a bunch of other stuff for me for 25+ years. Admittedly, never on a P-car, but at the end of the day, a manual trans is a manual trans, besides, I thought I was chasing a clutch issue.

Yes, but they weren't turning.

Gbox in Erie Colorado has an excellent reputation for repairing Porsche transmissions .Since you have the sound clip they  might be able to offer an opinion on what is causing the noise .

Sending them the sound clip sounds like a good idea.

There are a few Porsche specialists in the area.

Rennstatt Racing (Arbor Motion) in A2

Orion Automotive in A2

Nikolas Motorsport now by M1 Concourse

Munks Motors in Waterford

Autocore Performance Group in Waterford

One of them may be able to give you an idea of what is going on.

Yeah, don't use Munks.  They 100% screwed up the PPI on my 944 Turbo, I gave them a specific list of things to check, they said they did.  Car showed up and everything I asked them to check was screwed up/broken.  they couldn't even do the leak down test properly.

Car is home. Here is a video of what it sounds like when I turn the input shaft by hand on the bench:

No bueno. So, at this point, I'm assuming I'm looking at a rebuild. Any guesses as to what may have broken?

Sounds like a wet clutch Ducati in neutral; what's the problem???

something like that seems like it'd be pretty obvious when you crack it open but I didn't see that as an option...

That's rough.  I bet used working ones aren't too terrible in price.  More transmissions than M96s have survived.  I bet a wanted post at Rennlist or 986forum would find one quickly,

Yeah, that's a thought. I guess I'd have to see what the price difference is between a used one and a rebuild. There's something to be said for a warranty.

Edit: I did try posting a thread on 986forum, but it's been 24 hours and the mods haven't approved it yet. Not sure what the deal is with that.

You can always go used and then build your dream gearbox with a limited slip, etc too.

I've been hesitant to offer it because it has been sitting outside my garage under a tarp for a few years, but I have a 6-speed from a 2000 S that was in good condition when removed. I gave the shifter cable bracket to Angry Corvair a while back, but otherwise it's complete. I just worry that we could go through the trouble of getting it there to find out it's bad. If we could find a way to get it to you cheap, I'd be willing to work out an awesome deal on price. It's really just taking up space here.

If you think PDK don't fail, head over to Rennlist.  If your PDK fails, you will wish you had some other transmission.  Porsche won't sell internal parts and AFAIK no one will repair them.  They are outrageously expensive, even accounting for the usual P tax.  I love the one in my 991 C2S, but I pray it never decides to malfunction.

Awesome! Needless to say, I'm very interested. If we can set up a relay, I'm willing to make a decent road trip to do the last leg.

Before we go further, I'll check it over after work tonight. ...Clean it up a bit and spin the input shaft to make sure it's not making noises.

Sounds good, thanks again!

If this works out, I'll start a new thread to see if we can get a relay going.

From Oklahoma to Michigan, so unfortunately you're a bit out of the way. Thanks for the offer, though. smiley

I pulled it out and looked it over. It's dirty, but it makes normal transmission sounds when I turn the shaft. I'll clean it up and give it a better look when I have time, but I think it's good.

It is currently located in Northeast Oklahoma and the destination is (Central?) Michigan. I could probably take it as far as Springfield Missouri on a day that I have time.

After pulling it out of the parts pile yesterday:

I'm pretty sure that's where the mess came from on the side of the transmission. In the car it shifted well and I expect that it is in good condition, but should have the oil changed. I'm planning to cover the appendages and hit it with the power washer and some degreaser after work tonight.
