THE ANSWER in these parts are all too expensive, even the first gens.
Volvo really trips my trigger...unfortunately dirtbutts and hipsters have claimed all the good (read:cheap) ones.
Chevette with a 3800 Series II would be a blast!
Fox Mustang is looking to be the most available, if still a little spendy.

What year outback? I think the only electronics you might need to deal with are guages and plenty of people have solutions for that.
Putting a 3800 that far fwd in the chassis would probably be a nightmare though.

05 Outback. Have a RWD F-body 3800 block sitting in the garage to swap the Series II/III top end onto if she ever gives me the go-ahead. The weight isn't a big difference between a turbo Subi 4 / automatic and 3800 / six-speed combo, at least according to the individual weights.
