Dyno day had some issues. Knock sensor is reading through the roof, even at idle. Gonna try a new sensor. And Vtec solenoid is not actuating. We spent some time troubleshooting and signal is getting to the solenoid. So I've got a couple of fixes to do. Harry cleaned up what he could. It pulls 147 hp with no Vtec :(
I suppose the positive is that it's got 50 more hp in it that I haven't even felt yet. I certainly was expecting more out of the "Vtec crossover" than what I've experienced so far. 😂
Ok. The Vtec is working now. Revs like a 2 stroke dirt bike. 😳🤘. Gonna wait until I have Harry plugged into the ecu before I rip on it too much.

Seems the solenoid was bad. It did have a stripped bolt head, as if someone had tried to replace it previously.
Met up with Harry to log a few street pulls on my lunch break. We've confirmed the knock sensor and Vtec issues are resolved. Shooting for another dyno run tomorrow afternoon. Harry has been incredible with troubleshooting and being generous with his time. He says he finds my project intriguing, so he's happy to help. 3 tuning sessions at my house and 2 on the dyno and no upcharge from his initial quote. 👍

me too! :) I also want the tuning portion of this project completed and to put the rear trunk back on. And to do some real cruising in this thing!
-I forgot to mention that prior to last weekend's dyno session, I took the car to the local Cars and Coffee in Sarasota and met up with some friends. Sarasota has lots of money and high end cars, but the lil 914 got lots of attention from Porsche guys, honda guys, and plenty of people who didn't have any idea what they were looking at. That was pretty fun!
I actually think the sound fits the car really well, oddly enough.

Well, fell a bit short of the 200 wheel horsepower I wanted, but I'm only mildly disappointed. We got up to 170. Although it's not a huge number, the car is wonderful to drive and the power is more than adequate. We cheated the Vtec crossover down to 5500 rpm so I can get the change in sound a bit earlier, like a true ricer 😂. The most efficient crossover point was closer to 6500, but I'm willing to make that compromise. This is a street car. Overall, very pleased with Harry's work and the car! 😁

Earlier in the year, for our trip to the WV hillclimb, the plan was to make a stop at Tail of the Dragon with the e36 on the way up. That plan got altered, and I moved our reservation at Fontana Village to this weekend. I wanted to drive the Boxster up to rip on the Dragon. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate, with freezing temps, snow and ice rain. So we're road tripping in my work truck and the Dragon isn't going to be getting any rippin'.
we decided to stop at Auto Atlanta, a 914-focused shop north of Atlanta. I've not seen so many 914s together in one place. Very cool!

im hoping to come back to Deals Gap in October with the 914 for the "Okteenerfest" gathering to drive it on the Dragon.
What a cool looking shop! Are both rows of cars lined up outside ones for sale? Or customer cars waiting on service and/or restoration? And do you know what the yellow non-Porsche is with the big spoiler?
The cars in rows appear to have been sitting there a long time, covered in dust. I assume they're for sale. A few had prices listed on them. The yellow car is, in fact, a 914. 😂

I'd been searching for the right rear spoiler for a while. The requisites were fiberglass, mechanical fasteners (no double sided tape bs), and no Porsche logo. The right one popped up in Jacksonville and Stampie was nice enough to go snag it for me.
we met up on Christmas Eve for the exchange 🎄. Thanks Stampie! It was a cool weathered red color and I considered bolting it on as-is to match my red valve cover. But wifey wasn't having it. I want her to want to ride in it too, so it got some satin black to match the bumpers.
last year's Christmas break is when I made the initial purchase of the car. So it feels pretty rad to get it mostly "finished up" here at the 1 year anniversary. Also, this Saturday is my Dad's birthday. So I plan to drive it down to Englewood to visit him and surprise him with a ride. He suffers from dementia and the car hasn't really triggered much emotion from him in the past. So I'm not expecting much, but we'll see how it goes. Merry Christmas!

Dads birthday gathering was today and it went great! I decided to leave home early and take the long/scenic route down Anna Maria Island down into Sarasota. Traffic was light and the cruise was very enjoyable. I got down to Englewood and took Dad for a ride. He seemed to genuinely enjoy it, although I don't think he really remembers the significance the 914 had to us years ago. He got in the passenger seat and I pulled out of the neighborhood. I ripped it through the first 3 gears and then spotted a cop ahead in the median. Seems I got out of it early enough and he didn't come after me. Dad said "wow. That's wild!" He doesn't have much to say about anything these days, so that response was a win in my book 😁
I hung out with the fam for a few hours and decided to take the interstate home, as rain was starting to threaten. The car is totally smooth and happy at an 85 mph cruise. The car worked flawlessly all day. Temp never went over 188 and it was a blast! I put 138 miles on it. Excellent day!
With the 914 in a good state, I was able to move to the YXZ and try to find the source of the vibration that developed at Hollytree. Popped off the clutch cover and found a piece of the clutch basket snapped off. I'm pretty lucky this thing made it to the finish line!
it cracked the clutch cover as well.
the "right" thing to do would probably be to pull the whole damn trans out of the car and go through it. But it was functioning fine, minus the vibration. So I think I'm just going to replace the broken bits and send it.
24.5 mpg yesterday in the 914 run.
~384 mile range on a full tank.
just making a note, as I don't currently have a fuel gauge.
