All vacation and no cars make Patrick something something

The silly bit is i sold an ej22 with harness, headers, computer, kennedy adapter kit and everything else to make it work last year. This one has a pinto v6. So the cheap route is another pinto v6 or a vw engine. It’s got much water in a couple cylinders and it’s not loosening up. Car has good bones, came with another pair of wide wheels, an $800 brand new set of sand paddle tires, battery, has new cnc pedal box, brakes work, led lightbar works, nice high torque starter, for $800 total.
Look at that front end! Plenty of space for a 2nd engine if you can relocate the steering shaft somehow.
Isn't the 4.0 interchangeable with the 2.8 ? They were built in Cologne and shipped to US assembly plants, I thought. It would make a nice torquey buggy motor to turn those sand paddles.
In reply to DeadSkunk (Warren) :
More torque plus more weight on a rail. This man is going to need a weight box on the nose before it's over.
It is, but kennedy is only listing the 2.8/2.9 for their kit. I consulted my buddy Pokey who is somewhat knowledgeable and he believes there is something different about the 4.0 to where either the carbed intake won’t fit or there is lack of provisions for a distributor or something. Plus i fear the 4.0 may be a tad torquey for transaxle reliability? Plus unsure of the flywheel balance. I don’t really want to switch to efi then have to deal with all the extra plumbing and wiring and possibly make a ticking time bomb out of the trans. If i wanted to do that i’d just be stupid and order the LSx kit and toss a 4.8 in. Pokey has a 4.0 parts truck that “steams when it runs”
Ninja edit: according to the pictures I found on the ranger forum, the 4.0 has a dummy distributor plug to drive the oil pump, which can be pulled for a distributor, but the 2.8 distributor doesn’t fit because something changed from 2.8 to 2.9/4.0
i may just suck it up and repower it with something easier to find. And not ford based because man i hate ford distributors
I had a similar buggy that I hung a GTI engine on. It was just the right balance to fly flat. Aircooled power tended to drop the nose in the air, scares the crap out of you.
No matter what power you end up with, if it doesn't have a turn brake get one.
Just read in the for sale thread for all the stuff I agreed to buy from mrmsb that theres a complete bus engine that turns over, so that’s an excellent backup plan. I’m going for cheap and easy way to run around on trails and put the paddles on for silver lake.
Will be looking for a header and some other bits, including rear discs and maybe front brakes of the wide 5 variety. It would be awesome if someone made a spindle set for wilwood circle track hubs, but i doubt that. I quite like the spindle mount front wheels, and i know front brakes on a rail do very little, but the ability to throw 15x12’s and slicks all around to see if it will turn is tempting.

The 4.0 has a much taller deck height.
What exactly happened here? You "accidently" found a dune buggy while on vacation? Or was this thing waiting for you all along?
BTW, I think it's super cool!
Does Calri's dad think that an educational visit to Plymouth Rock would be good for Colin?
Say, on or before Thanksgiving? Lots to learn there for a young boy!

No we got there Thursday night and I looked on Craigslist because bored and couldn’t fall asleep, I messaged the guy and he called me during breakfast, we went and looked at it around noon, then picked it up Saturday morning. If it was waiting all along i’d have taken my truck to Michigan and not the Charger
