Getting better.  Got the carb dialed in pretty close yesterday morning.  Set it by the book(float level to 35mm, then do idle mix circuits) and it has a little stumble if you push accelerator too hard but according to the weber book my adjustments are in the "your jets are correctly sized" range.  Timing is set at 7.5-8ish btdc which is factory spec, working off an original plastic timing scale.  It has to be about optimal because +/-4 degrees either way and it doesn't want to start.  Wherw I'm at now it fires right up.  I'm guessing from tuning and stuff i will be cleaning the plugs again because part of the book process is richening the mix till it stalls then backing off.  I may even spend the $10 and get new plugs once all the tuning is set.  I have a feeling the thing just needs to run at this point to get everything moving like it should be since it sat for years and years with open exhaust ports.  I also think i messed up and put 1.5 year old gas(with stabil) in it instead of fresh fresh, so that alone may fix the stumble.  
 

i forgot i have the throttle cable from the Wartburg when it had the rear engine so i am going to make that work, and i need to get the passenger side exhaust manifold on and muffle things because loud.     Those couple things and mounting the new seat should make it capable of driving around the yard enough to see how it shifts.  If it passes that test I'll take it over to my parents and give it a better test because they have 16 acres.  
 

Also when it was hanging on the engine hoist the front was up too, and i spun one of the homemade front wheels.  There's about 1/2" runout surprise.  So they're not going to stay for when it finally gets tagged for street use.  For woods use i'm sure they'll be fine.  I'm going to see if there are any front drums in my stuff and if so i'll turn them into hubs on the lathe then i can bolt some bug wheels on it.  In back I'm probably likely to grab some 15x8 4x130 wagon wheels and 235/75 mud tires and ditch the wide 5 adapter and too wide wheels.  
 

also researching t trailers.  Might be a solid use of the frame and one axle of the rusty flatbed trailer that used to be a rusty enclosed trailer.  
 

if it seems like i bounce around a lot, i do.  I have a hard time pushing the last 5% to actually finish things.  

Crank those rear torsion bars up a few clicks and you'll find it a much better handling machine.

No need for a trailer, just fashion a simple tow bar off the front beam and flat tow it.
