Nope. Theres a chunk missing from the airdam. That ive attempted to repair twice without success. The plan is to fix it somehow with a splitter. Dunno how yet, but i haven't made the splitter tet either.
Good call in door bars and cutting. Very good call.
It’s cool to hear the motivation story... might be hard to work into the 3mins, and distracting. It good to hear here.
Nice job! Keep up the good work, and testing!

Motivation story? Which is that?

lots of work. Lots and lots of work. But, I have a target. See, in every competition ive ever been in, ive been told to pick your targets. Wether that was football, autocross, or boy scouts, ive always had to have something i was aiming for. In this years upcoming challenge, I have two targets. First is top 10 overall. Second is beating angrycorvair in his mid engine v8 corvair. That may or may not actually get finished. But my major one, and the most euqal challenge target I can think of to my build, is machinenbau in datsanity. Its an incredible build, that outclasses mine in every measurable way. And has already competed at the challenge and placed well before the mammoth paint and body and sorting campaign hes been on all year. But v6 swapped, street legal, rwd Japanese car. Who's build thread rivals mine in length and scope. Its incredible I hope to match him, and hopefully squeak by him in the rankings. But it will be close! And FUN!!!!!
One of the {ahem}... challenges... you’ll encounter with practicing the 3min speech is you’ll first need to spend 1min explaining what challenge is. You probably want to find a way to do that upfront, in a way that leads you into why you did this car this year, and the goals you set out for yourself... so when you get to challenge you can drop the front-end “explain what challenge is”, and dive into the part you’re familiar with:
I set out these goals after competing with the AMC and helping my buddy Dallas in 2017.
1) Build with my Dad, ‘cause he’s awesome, and we don’t get to do enough car stuff.
2) Finish top 10 Overall
3) Have Fun
To do that, I’d learned in 2017 I needed to up my engineering game, so I decided to swap a Chevy 3400 into a miata... because Miata is the answer , my dad and I love chevy’s, and the 3400 is a more interesting swap than an LS.
we knew we needed to tear apart the car to do this, which meant I got to be a better welder... since we seam welded the car, fabbed our own front suspension crossmember, rollbar, and a bed frame-based “butterfly brace” (apologies to FlyinMiata).
etc
That’s how I’d suggest you approach it... although you’ve got to find your own flow around the car, the theme, etc. but, goals list, then ‘what we did to meet those goals’ seems like a good way to approach the talk. Ymmv.
I have a question as a challenge newbie, first of all great build and wish I still had the opportunity to do this with my Dad. I am on the other side working with my teen boys. You said that the items for cutting and polishing the paint were not counted in the budget,
"Old money: 1945.53
new money:
none of this counts in the budget, thank god, but it counts in my wallet....
buffer and pad, harbor freight: 45
cutting compound, scratch and swirl remover, and machine glaze: 65
pads and sandpaper for DA 44
sandpaper and block for hand sanding: 26
Recoup: 820
new total: 1945.53"
but I thought consumable items were supposed to be counted? For example when painting the car sandpaper, tape, etc had to be included. I am asking this as an information to a new team as we are still working on out car and budget. Thanks
In reply to Fladiver64 :
Budget only what’s on the car during competition.
Exactly. Sandpaper and compound are as much tools as screwdrivers. They are just tools that are one time use. Im sure a smarter guy could find a way to deduct the paint i sanded off from the budget, but i didnt. Its on the car in my mind (even though i swept it off the floor)
In reply to Dusterbd13-michael :
I couldn’t find it but did you include the thinner? I didn’t on the Q45 because it flashes off
I did! As well as the hardener.
In reply to Dusterbd13-michael :
I don't know about the hardner. In my mind it changes the paint and stays. But I could be wrong.
Thinner is part of the paint once mixed.
In reply to Dusterbd13-michael :
great, thanks makes sense, just wanted to be sure.
No problem! It all was spoon fed to me by john welsh, stampie, and Patrick. Still is to a large extent. So keep asking questions!
I put everything I sprayed on the car in the budget. Once Bondo or thinner or hardner is out of the can, it can't be re-used and I count that much in the budget. Pro-rating is okay.
My paint job and bodywork cost $214.65. If I pro-rated how many discs and inches of each sandpaper roll I went through, it's probably an extra $40 or so. I bought literally over $100 of sandpaper and still have a ton leftover. But those were never installed on the car.
Sandpaper is no different to me from angle grinder discs, sandblasting media, WD40, and electricity. Consumable tools.

But doesn't the thinner evaporate off just leaving the original paint? I guess as a test you could put paint in a cup with thinner and weight it before and after drying.
I've no dog in this but *the thinner* isn't in your budget? Come on now, that seems just silly to me.
In reply to pres589 (djronnebaum) :
I tend to overthink things. Theres probably an extra 20 bucks in my budget that could be removed, but wont be because it doesn't feel right. Like thinner: my gun cleaning thinner that i put in the can was almost full, and is now almost all evaporated, leaving very luttle paint in the bottom. In theory it could evaporate. However its in the budget cause it hit the car. Same with the whole can of bondo, even though i sanded the majority off.

Stampie is very creative at rules interpretation, and should be banned from thinking sometimes.
In reply to Patrick :
Lol. But I do have a $20 shop supplies to cover anything like this. But don't make me start weighting paint.
I could Legitimately load the car on the trailer tonight and go to the challenge. Instead I'm obsessing over the little details and debating pulling the doors off so I can paint all the jams body color properly. Theres something wrong with me.
Id claim the thinner, if part of the paint, but not to clean the gun with. I have always felt like Duster is VERY honest and forthcoming about his expenses and budget. If i had to claim welding wire, thinner for paint should be in there, lol!
I'm not sure if I used a full spool of welding wire but it's in there. I'm pretty sure most my challenge cars are essentially made of welding wire. Also as a side note to y'all following along at home paint the door jambs before you paint the car. Your life will be much easier in that case.
one down. The rest of them to go.
Remind me to add the can of rustoleum to the budget.
That looks good. You'll be able to sleep tonight now.
That's just a rattle-can, right?
Yup! Its not quite the same shade of green as the valspar, but close enough for the jambs. The general plan is to scrub and tape up the car around the jambs, take off what i can, and rattle can it.
Ill see how bad of an idea that was tomorrow when i untape it.
