So I’m confused, are you doing a body swap?
general plan:
C4 front subframe with steering suspension and brakes will find a home under front of Corvair
C4 LT1 will find a home where the back seat of Corvair used to be
Audi 6MT will be coupled to LT1, which will allow LT1 to live several inches more rearward than in a Crown conversion
C4 rear uprights, trailing arms, halfshafts, spring, and dampers will find a home under rear of Corvair
I will fab rear subframe to support transaxle and react lateral loads plus provide attachment for C4 transverse leaf
Due to revised CG location, i will probably adapt another set of C4 front brakes to the rear uprights
plus about eleventeen other things that i haven't even thought of yet

The DeBoss Garage guy on Youtube built an Audi with an LS engine adapted to the Audi 6MT. He had an adapter built to mate the two, and I think some work was done to the transmission to beef it up for high horsepower (his LS engine has four turbos on it). I don't know if a similar adapter would be needed for an LT1 but it may be worth searching through his videos for the information.
Depending on which Audi 6MT you're using (duh), the need to beef it up may be unnecessary. The 01E used in the B5S4 and C5A6 can probably stand the output of the might LT1 in this application. Can't speak to many of the other options though...
In reply to stuart in mn :
seen it. but he had all kind of fancy stuff like dual-disc clutch etc. essentially, he welded the front of a SBC bell to the Audi transaxle, so if he blows it up he has to go through all that fab again. i will make mine bolt together, because i intend to break one transaxle. for science.
In reply to rdcyclist :
will not be using 01E, because (1) only 5 forward gears and (2) expensive.
i intend to install the 3.30:1 1st gear from a 2006 A4 Quattro V6 6MT (02X, code GYY) into the gearbox from a 2006 A4 FWD 2.0T (01X, code GVD), which has a 3.75 R&P. This nets the most favorable RPM drops that I can come up with, and results in a reasonable 2600 RPM at 80 mph in 6th gear. I can get a GYY in Canadia for about $225 USD, and a GVD either in US or Canadia for about the same, according to Car-Part.com, so I will buy both boxes and make a self-trade of the 1st gears since they clearly have same FMV.
here's a comparison of the LT1's 6MT gearing vs the best combo i can come up with in US (there was a 3.55:1 R&P in European A4's but it didn't cross the pond):
The LT1 should have enough grunt in this car to power out of a 33% RPM drop on the 2-3 shift versus only a 27% drop on the same shift with its OE. The 3.75 R&P means i'm going to have to wring it's neck a little to get to the traps in 4th. Those "mph@rpm" values are calculated with a 315/35-17 tire and a 5500 rpm redline, but i think this car should trap around 112 so will need to spin 5700-ish for a couple seconds. my previous V8Vair trapped at 104 with less power, more weight, and worse aero.
Thanks for those calculations, now I need to know where I need to be to ensure i steal your fastest Corvair crown

Current record is 13.781 @ 104. That was good for 18th out of 79 in $2004. 9.4:1 327 with Vortec heads, small flat-tappet cam, chicom airgap dual plane, 600 vac sec, and an HEI with an aggressive mechanical curve.
Depending on trans and clutch survival, I think the new car will go high 12s at 112-ish. Your LS car can probably beat me on paper. That’s why we don’t race paper, bitch.
I am excited to see where this goes.
The real question that must be answered is will the corvair have heat and or windshield wipers?
In reply to pimpm3 :
Maybe, eventually. I’d be surprised if the OE Corvair wipers didn’t work. IDK how much of the climate control system will make the jump for 2019, but it is my intent to make this a somewhat comfortable cruiser that also hauls balls.
Woohoo, the recoup train just pulled into town!
goodbye, X brace!
Goodbye, X brace hardware!
Hello, dead President!
In reply to pimpm3 :
I haven’t forgotten about you! In a couple weeks the train’s gonna pull into your town!
So here are a couple of screen shots from another thread, because I didn’t want to clog up that thread with this stuff:
Sold the X brace and hardware for $100. Needed it off the car so I could remove the cat-back which I sold for $450. Tonight a guy came by to give me $20 for the horns, ended up leaving with the ash tray, lighter, and instrument cluster for $60 total. I’m not trying to kill people on prices, but I’m confident I will go well beyond max recoup.
Do I remember the rules correctly that you can only recoup half the value of the build car (the $100 Corvair) but you can completely zero out parts cars leaving you with a pile of free stuff?
Edit: actually read the rules, looks like only $1000 in total recoup. Hmmmmm........
In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :
Max total recoup is $1000.
Max recoup for each individual purchase is the price of that purchase, subject to the total recoup limit.
I am confident that I will sell off about $2500 from the C4 and still have the complete front and rear suspensions plus the complete drivetrain minus exhaust.
So according to Challenge rules I will have $900 to spend, plus a whole bunch of trade fodder.

FYI, on the Audi transaxles 1st & 2nd are cut onto the input shaft, so you'll have to swap 1st & 2nd from the 02X to the 01X.
I'll check out the codes and find out if I can help you get a better R&P ratio from a Canadian or Mexican Audi...
Trans codes for the 02X with the 1st & 2nd gear you want (3.30, 1.850) : GMV, GYY
Trans codes for the 01X final drive you want (3.55) : FYA, HCF, HTA, JEM, JWS
There is also a 3.75 ratio (marginally better than the 3.875) : GJU, GVC, GVD, HCK, JWR
Here's an example for sale right now:
In reply to Gingerbeardman :
Thanks for the 01X/02X info! Since pretty much all of these boxes have the same percent drop on the 1-2, I probably won’t waste time mixing and matching. The LT1 has enough grunt to not care. My biggest want was to have the tallest possible 1st so I’m not revved out by 30mph.

I know. Keep up the good work I can't wait to see this thing in October.
