I know you're against flares, but...Corvair with box flares sounds interesting...someone should do that even if it's not you. (Actually you'd have to un-narrow your suspension to make it wide enough to need box flares, I suppose.)

Just read your whole thread and noticed this. I’m humbled by the mention of my E36 m3-pile being mentioned in this thread. I must follow along now.

I agree with peoples suggestions of rolling the fenders if you don’t need a ton more clearance.

Keeping the un-altered exterior would be awesome.

So far, I haven’t paid anyone to do anything on the Challenge car. That changed today. Inspired by Go_Gators’ great negative camber discovery and knowing that I can achieve about -2 on both rears at ride height, I realized that I could use the UBJ mod to pull the top of the tire inboard a bunch, then use the factory camber adjustment on the LCA to pull the bottom inboard while still dialing in a little more than -2 if I want to. This will also allow me to run 6mm wheel spacers on the rear, alleviating the problem of Sawblades sawing into calipers. So I reached out to Go_Gators and he gave me Buck’s contact info (which I just realized is in the above thread). My rear UCAs are now in the hands of UPS, and I’m knocking out other stuff while I anxiously await their return.

what kind of other stuff, you ask? Well, I started scraping factory undercoating from the rear rails and wheelwells, to ready them for upcoming cutting and welding.  Before:

The 285s inboard sidewall fouled the OE Corvair shock mount and reinforcement, as seen below:

so I’m cutting those spot welds and removing the shock mount bits. Removing these bits gains almost 3” of clearance, so future-proofing in case I get wider and higher-positive offset rims someday.

Cutting the spot welds preserves most of the wheelwell, which I can reshape into (most of) a nice little mini tub. It’s gonna be cool. LR almost done:

I’m going to spend another hour or so scraping RR before bed tonight.

Tomorrow is Wednesday. That means I have 28 days before hitting the road to Gainesville. I’m *still* not smart enough to realize there’s no way to get it all done, so it’s full steam ahead for another 28 days!

Flywheel pr0n below:

Top is the used flywheel we used as a parts donor and machining guide; bottom is the new piece Tony made, which will bolt directly to the LT1 crank. Still needs starter ring gear, then I can drop it off along with the LT1 flexplate to have it balanced to match the flexplate. Dude said he can turn it around in a day or two.

Hey guy, whatcha doing?

oh, not much, just tucking 285s like they were space-saver spares.

Oh, that’s nice.  What else is going on?

Not a lot, just checking out my flywheel.  In my garage.  Because it’s done.

Tomorrow I deliver flywheel and flexplate to balancing shop.  He said about $100 and probably turn it around in 1-2 days.

Also, as noted in Minor Win thread, today I called Sweet Manufacturing to ask about a non-standard steering U-joint assembled from standard parts, and they said “no problem.”  I should have that tomorrow.

Jay and I are going to put in a bunch of work tomorrow night, then Saturday is a family tradition day so no garage time.  Then no more slack days before Challenge, except for a college campus visit with my older girl on October 4th.

26 days.

In reply to aselmike :

There’s only about 3” of bump travel due to the structure above the kickup where the vertical forces will be reacted (pretty much right where the OE spring perch was), but I don’t expect to use that much as I think the back end will be lighter than the donor C5’s back end.

If the tires don't leave witnesses marks somewhere in the wheel well, there's more on the table.  Looks like you're heading down the right path wink

That flywheel looks pretty awesome.  I do appreciate a well-executed machined part.

Can't imagine the dumpster-load of chips that went with it.  You'd need a grain-shovel for clean-up.

Have you decided to re-narrow stuff to fit them?

Very nice looking flywheel. Will the friction surface come from an existing clutch kit or will it also be a custom creation?

In reply to Dusterbd13-michael :

Doing the Go_Gators UCA mod to buy fender clearance, plus a 6mm spacer to buy caliper clearance, plus something else I can’t remember right now.  Additional narrowing not required.

Re-using the friction plate that was on our donor flywheel.  It’s a common part, Fidanza iirc, so if I need a new one it’s only $85-ish.

I bet the weight balance in a C4 was really different too. If you end up needing a heavier spring, one of the guys from the AMC forum sent me a reference list of the different composite springs used in this suspension. There’s several different ones with different spring rates.

My buddy Jay came over last night and we figured some stuff out.

Had to empty my Corvair-shaped storage locker, so bolted the C4 seats in place. Kinda. C4 tracks are longer, so front holes are perfect and rears are off about 1.5”. Will be an easy fix. Also figured out seat belts, which I scavenged from C4 including the mount for 3rd point:

Just needs a little trimming and welding:

This location puts the belt at a good height and angle.

Also took this opportunity to mock up (well, to set in approximate location) the Boxster shifter, and verified shift cables will be long enough. I *think*.

We also took a mess of measurements to determine how much rear bulkhead and floor to remove, and pondered a few ways to seal it back up and make it easily serviceable.

Sweet Manufacturing of Kalamazoo MI came through as promised with the steering U-joint to connect C4 intermediate shaft to the Corvair upper.

At $56 it’s a big chunk of Challenge budget, but in the battle of time vs money, sometimes money wins.

Saturday is Family Day.  Sunday I’ll be back at it. Too dumb to know it’s impossible.

Ok, so I’m *not* too dumb to know it’s impossible to get this car done in the remaining 23 days. However, i *am* too stubborn to give up. Today I bounced around several tasks, ultimately getting a lot done that wasn’t really on the list.

For example, the manual trans pedal assembly I got at the swap meet was for an early car, ie pre-1965. So it doesn’t bolt into my car. But the 65-up shares a lot of individual bits with the earlier assembly, so I pulled them both apart and started figuring it out. I had to CAD a template for drilling the clutch pivot bracket bolt pattern to my automatic pedal box. Then I made some no-cost pedal pads:

And that’s really the only tangible accomplishment for today.  The rest of it was just preparing to chop up the back seat area for powertrain packaging.

Woke up at 4:30AM and couldn’t get back to sleep, so was at work by 6:15AM and able to skate at 3:30PM. Tired, but still motivated. Picked up some test-fit parts from whiskey_business. Got the good news that the Go_Gators mod is complete on my rear UCAs and they’ll be headed back to me tomorrow. Started cleaning the LT1 so it’s not a filthy mess while we’re measuring for the adapter plate. Before:

And after:

Sides and back are clean. Didn’t go near the front yet. Moved on to bolting up the friction plate (2 bolts LOL not permanent) and clutch kit so I could take a couple measurements:

Flywheel is *so* nice! And yes, I spun the trans with it while I clicked through the gears. :-)

Tony’s coming over tomorrow after work so we can measure up for the adapter plate, and he’ll start working on that in another day or 2. Once we’re done with the measurements, I can get the flywheel and LT1 flexplate to the balance guy so he can balance the flywheel to match the flexplate. I hope he can turn it around in a day or two like he said on the phone.

I also assembled the early pedals to the modified late pedal box. Need my Audi clutch master so I can mod the pedal box some more.  Mounting the clutch master to top of pedal box, up under dash. Will also mod the clutch pedal so it moves the pushrod the correct distance. Would suck to get that wrong.
