You MIGing or TIGing mostly now?

MIG because (1) it's so easy and (2) I've only been doing steel lately. I had to dust off the TIG yesterday, I think it's been 18 months since I last used it. So you know that first bead was just lovely. 🤘🏻🤣
Happy 58th! Great to see this coming back to the finish line, can't wait to see the first test drive. It is amazing how much you learn and what you change when you go back and re-engineer a project after the first time.
As seen above, progress has been made. Quit early today, taking AK1 out to dinner before going to Red Wings vs Maple Leafs. Hey-ey Hockeytown!

I've heard of losing the 10mm socket, but an entire Corvair?
Yep, she's running and driving again. Starting issue seems to be resolved. There's an occasional not periodic noise, like a light hammer strike on something, that has me concerned. Seems to happen on rpm change either up or down, so I'm thinking it's in the stack of flexplate / spacers / flywheel / pressure plate. It also felt like maybe it was only hitting on 7, so I have to dig into that as well.
for now, though, I'm going to enjoy the fact that it runs and moves under its own power, and I'm going to clean the garage and do some scheduled maintenance on our three DDs.
Here is my guess... bent valve. Ask me how I know....
Take off valve covers and start it up. It will be obvious which one is a little sticky.
Ymmv...
I have had that happen more than once. The noise was the valve barely kissing the piston. New valve fixed it right up.
A boroscope through the spark plug holes will show the witness marks if that's what it is
Actually, are you talking about an occasional "ting" when the revs go up or down? If so, I agree with flywheel type stuff.

Yep
If I didn't know the cars, I wouldn't recognize the garage.
If I can re-home my scrap metal bins, I can move MonZora a little more toward the outside, which will give AW a little leeway in her parking alignment.

I thought AW had a wicked cool car. That car is merely mildly interesting.
most winter beaters are not even mildly interesting, so she's still hashtag winning.

At this point in time, perhaps. There's definitely ten pounds of E36 M3 in this 5lb bag though.

Happens.
Mine is trashed right now with no time to clean it nor work on the project.
I have Opel parts all over the workbench, in bins, in THE bin, the new engine on the floor attached to a non functioning hoist, the new piston for the hoist next to it in a box, the engine stand waiting for the hoist to work, a pile of snowblower that is torn apart (still), on and on.
Friggin' Corvair looks mint!

it's all good, my friend. I appreciate the kind words, as well as the jokes about the car never running. i mean, total run time vs total time of ownership is something like 1 hour in 5 years...
