Rotella is good, especially the 5w40. Add 2 stroke at 1oz/gallon, makes the diesel a lot more like the old stuff the truck was designed to burn, cheapest outboard oil on the shelf will be good. IIRC many claim an extra MPG or two, a lot more than the energy content of the oil.
A little more documentation on the transmission changes. The big thing is that the bellhousing design changed some time in late '94 or '95 and went from an external slave to in internal (concentric) slave cylinder. When this change was made, the case design and bolt pattern was also changed. Here are the bolt patterns:

My truck is a '95 by model year, but has the older slave/bellhousing/case design. The newer ones are a little more desireable because they'll bolt to a Cummins.
