New to 914s but an old car guy. I’ve had a little of everything during my life but never a vintage Porsche. I’ve had a 951, 986, 996 and currently have a 991 C2S. Always wanted a 914,ever since riding in a new Orange one in my teens.
After months of looking at crap, today I found my 914. It is an all original 1971, rust free, original orange paint and 42,000 miles. It was a California car stored for many years in Arizona as a project that never got started. The interior is all there but in poor shape. The engine is unmodified and turns over. The gas tank is missing but that just meant I could confirm no rust in the area under the tank. All the body electrical systems worked when we connected a battery. I’m researching a correct new interior and will be pulling the motor for a reseal and refresh. The body is amazingly rust free. There are two or three spots of surface rust, but the underside is super clean. The factory battery tray is solid. They car was stored without the battery so I’m sure that helped save the area. It’s got Riviera 5 spoke mags, The trunk still has the plastic clips for the targa roof which is also in great shape.
Let us know the condition of the area under the battery, commonly referred to as the "hell hole". I hope you dodge that bullet.

That is identical (in color, wheels, etc) to the one i bought. Unfortunately mine ripped in half trying to winch it up on the trailer from under the pine tree where it had sat on flat tires since 1986 (in 2016ish). Luckily the seller gave me a refund.
The 914 is one of my dream cars. But i know i will probably never actually own one.

That saves sooo much grief. What is the plan for fuel delivery, are you keeping the injection?
Plan is to get it running fuel injected and shifting right and then decide where to go with it. I have a Porsche 991S that I might just sell to fund a 914-6 conversion on this one. I go back and forth between totally original restoration and conversion with a 3.0 flat six and carbs.

Nice find! The "hell hole" looks good in your last picture, but also look where the firewall meets the floor pan. I got a new battery tray from Pelican just because, pretty cheap if I remember right.

I went to a local VW shop looking for recommendations for engine work for my type IV. Sitting on the floor were several engines. One of them was a complete 911SC dropout. I spoke to the owner and asked him about the motor. He said he got it to install in VW bus, but the bus got sold before he started the project. He got a 914 do do the swap, but sold the 914. I told him I would give him the opportunity to finish the swap.
I decided it was a waste to spend money on the Type IV motor. It turns over and I was assuming a reseal and gaskets at minimum. Luckily the place where I bought the 914 was just dropping out the engine to do the work. So now I’m jumping into the deep end of the 914-6 pool. I don’t want to do a GT conversion, just a narrow body 914-6. I need a flywheel to mate the 3.0 to a 901 transmission, an oil tank and lines, mounts and engine compartment tin.
The 911 motor has the stock fuel injection set-up but I’m thinking about carbs unless there is a compelling reason to retain the CIS.
