Aaaahh! I love reading about your events and adventures. Can you just copy and paste it here?
Fine!
I'll do some updates here.
March 2024
New fender and nose panel installed. Pulled the front apron out with a shop crane. Got the fire bottle serviced and mounted transverse and pushed further back in the car. Also finally got my 190,000 diff rebuilt with new clutches and stuff. Spent a lot of time on iRacing this offseason, so I'm hoping to break into the 2:13 or even 2:12s at VIR this year!
Just need an alignment, swap some tires around, and do a nut and bolt check before I load off and make the tow down to VIR.
May 2024
March went well. Saturday morning practice, my ABS went out. Turns out that dropping your ABS module on the ground will probably break it. I found a module at Al Taylor's parts yard nearby and made it back just in time to qualify. I ran a PB 2:13.9 which I thought surely was good for 3rd or 4th, but now with all of the new talent joining Spec3, it was only good for 7th! Race 1 went well, race 2, I went off on a crazy restart and ended up dead last before the race ended early from some E30s putting each other in the wall. Race 3 was an insane battle with lots of passing. I'm a little bummed I didn't run 2:13 as consistently as I wanted to, but I have a plan to try to do this in May. The new rebuilt diff took some getting used to for sure.
April Summit saw another super tight field. I swapped on the new, stiffer H&R front anti roll bar that's been legal for a couple of years now and the car felt good. Again I ran a new PB by a second a half ( 1:26.07) and fought tooth and nail for 3rd and 4th place. In race 3, I fought Charles for the win and lost by only 0.004 seconds after a 26 minute dog fight.
I put the car in the trailer after this event, and then rolled it right back out for the Watkins Glen race weekend a few days later. Car never skipped a beat.
Ended up running a new PB by over a second here as well, which was only a few tenths off the Spec3 record. Still lots to work on.
June 2024
No "build" updates to discuss. The car continues to chew through race weekends without issue. Up to about 70 races in a row without mechanical DNF or similar.
Broke into the mid 2:13 with a new PB of 2:13.2 at VIR with the help of the draft from Andy Schmidt and we have some awesome battles all weekend. Basically every second of every race was nose to tail. We actually ended up doing 5 races at Hyperfest with me winning 2 of them and finishing second in the other 3.
Then I headed to NJMP to try out the new pavement and ran a new PB by 2 full seconds. The car was favoring understeer with the new ARB up front and the additional toe in on the rear (.2 degrees) so I went back to zero toe after this event. I do fear that the new Spec3 front anti roll bar will limit the amount of oversteer I can dial in. We'll see. NJMP new PB 1:32.444
Shortly after that, I did some preventative maintenance and replaced the front control arms that have seen about 6 seasons of use over the past 4 years and then headed to Summit Point. The heat index was over 100 degrees both day and cockpit temperatures were over 135 degrees mid race for Race 1. The top 4 in Spec3 ran within a single tenth of each other basically all weekend and we raced basically two wide for 2 full hours.
November 2024
Wow! It's been a while! The car hasn't given me much trouble besides a wheel bearing and I haven't done much in the way of maintenance or really any mechanical work.
Since my last post:
- July Pitt Race was great. I did not run a new PB but still had some good racing. We all got to meet one of our newest Great Lakes Spec3 drivers, Clay who was in HPDE 3. Lots of great conversation with people in the region who were excited about the Spec3 growth there.
- August VIR was cancelled due to flooding for I went down to Roebling Road to do my first NASA southeast event with the new Spec3 people down there. It was a great time at a fun track and I managed to snag 2 podiums and a win in the last race.
- September UTAH NASA championships. I flew out to Utah to be the series leader for SE30 and SE46 for the NASA championships and had a great time. Racing in the championships in 2023 was fun, but being a part of making the whole event run was even more rewarding. 2025 will be at Ozarks and I'm excited to go.
- September Summit Point. We had some amazing racing and I duked it out with the reigning national champion in Spec3, Jon McAvoy and even came away with a win. I ran a new PB at the track only a little bit off the lap record.
- October Watkins Glen saw the biggest Spec3 field yet for WGI. We had a great time, although some other classes had oopsies in basically every race and it was all FCY. Really not much racing to speak about but it was great having so many new Spec3s racing at the Glen and that's hopefully a good sign for 2025.
- October VIR. Wow! I ran a new PB again, getting down to the low 2:12s and duking it out with Jon and Ross (who won MA Rookie of the year). We fought tooth and nail for every lap of every race and really put on a show. One of the clips of Jon and I racing side by side through the uphill esses has been viewed near 3 million times now on social media. https://www.instagram.com/p/DBozC8PRrpN/
Next up, Road Atlanta in December, then finally more than a few weeks off as I relax before VIR in march kicks off another busy season. Off season maintenance includes some improvements to the cage (mainly door bars) and maybe replacing/repainting my front bumper.
