Glad to see people like the look and are excited to see the MG progressing. It was cool that I just kinda started it after running it last at the challenge last year. It needed jumped but otherwise it just barked to life and was like.. so where we going?
Saw this on barnfinds.com today. Obviously a B not a midget, but I think the shape you roughed out looks better...

This isn't a bad idea. I have to have access to the trunk for fuel. I had considered like a 4 bar linkage that lifts the whole top up and back. I could also do a small trunk that hinges at the base of the rear window and then the top could hinge up from there also.
I realize you have the header bar at the top of the windshield, and this isn't exactly "simple", but if you hinge the top to the trunk lid like you described, then built something similar to old style hood hinges from the top of the windshield going backwards, when you lifted the trunk, the whole top could raise up & forward out of the way.
