Didn't get to far. Nothing alarming yet. More work tomorrow
I guess I'm confused as to what's not allowing the head bolts to tighten. My mind jumps to stripped fasteners or block which I hope isn't the case here. What could cause this???
I went to check torque on the heads and the head bolts started to tighten at 25lb. They get back up to 85 again if I put a torque wrench on it. At this point something didn't happen right. Wether I screwed up the torque, Got the motor to hot, or the head gaskets really failed weird. At this point the plugs don't look like we are burning coolant but I can't be for sure.

On previous page when you said they start spinning at 25 ft-lb I thought you had pulled a thread. But your latest post sounds like that's not the case. Aluminum moves around a bit in the initial heat cycles, I think, so you may not have any issue. If there's no coolant in the oil and no oil in the coolant, I'd torque to spec and hit SEND.
Gaining 1/2 to 3/4 turn on a re-torque of an aluminum cylinder head is a totally normal occurance. You should back them off one at a time before re-torquing too, not just applying tightening torque.
I feel like loosing a few ftlb is normal but going from 85 to 25 seems like a crazy shift. And some bolts are still at 85 it's weird

You really do not know if it is still at 85 unless you mark it loosen it and retorque it. If the marks still line up I would be surprised, but that would be proof.
So back off 1/4 turn on every bolt and then torque sequence 25flb, 45flb then 85ftlb? Feel like a fair game plan?

On re-torque go straight to the upper number. Only back off one at a time and re-torque, in the pattern specified.
back to our regularly scheduled programming. Gear box seals are rebuilt. Longer hose for power steering made and installed. Rockers reinstalled, distributer back in. Need to adjust valves and we can get it all back and running.
Valves got adjusted this morning. Throwing it back together to confirm it fire then put the cooling system back in. Hopefully have first fire on Monday.
1. This thing screams!
2. Blew a fuse on the way home for the fans. Had to pull over and change. Went up to a 30 amp. Need to split my two fans into separate circuits to prevent this.
3. Still have a very annoying leak from the valve cover. Switched from cork to a modern design. Not sure what to do now.
4. I need to be better at driving stick. I suck.
5. This big old girl moves out when you give it to it.
