This week I've been doing the paint job on the Lemons/Chump ETA (not my car, but I"m driving it at Summit POint Lemons and VIR Chump 24-hour, so this is my contribution to the team)....

Thought I'd share some pics 4 days into my paint job on it. Still a lot to go (and 2 days left before the wife is back from the beach, so really....2 DAYS!), but it's getting there. A few snaps of the unfinished product. The paint scheme is really for Chump, but we have some "theme" things in the works for LeMons for it (not on the car yet) that will be on the car only for LeMons races :)

Rust-Oleum and 3M should freaking sponsor us...this is all a rattle-can and tape job.

Here's the car "before" (as of one week ago)

white side mostly done

black side a ways to go

trunk

some blue shadowline detail on the hood, late-night mini-project.

I don't suppose you want to do a brief materials/technique list. You seem to get really good results with the same paints that others get horrible results with.

Wow, cool paint job.

I feel bad now, I had my kids paint ours with a roller. It took less than an hour.

it's really all Rust-oleum professional rattle cans (though I've had trouble with the spray nozzles on a couple of them for some reason).

Not much technique really. I am notoriously a lazy prepper/painter and am better at thinking of designs than executing them. This car had been resprayed several times, has lots of dents, some bondo, some rust, and clearcoat peeling everywhere....I basically just used a palm sander with 100 grit and then 150 grit pads to take it down. Cleaned surface (I think I've been using Windex, because it's what I had around)...Primed dark or light depending on the topcoat color (1 coat), did a quick wetsand by hand - and I mean very quick, then paint top coat 2 coats. Once it's all done we'll bomb the whole car with clearcoat.

Don't get me wrong.....I've had some issues with the paint spiderwebbing in a few places, but that's mostly when I haven't shaken the new cans up enough I think. It's a solid 10-footer job really. Closer look shows the flaws (especially in my masking). That's why I took the pics from 10 feet away :)

Taping I've been using a variety of "whatever is around".....thankfully mostly 3M tape (blue and "contractor grade") but also some harbor freight masking tape (NOT recommended, it sucks....). My pinstripes are not even close to being "clean" lines (combination of cheap tape and lazy masking), but they look good if you stand away a bit.

In short....it's a good thing this car will be in motion when most people see it. Sure as hell won't take it to any concours shows, lol.

I did a roller job on my dad's work Dodge Ram a couple months ago :)

This one, the guys wanted a design so I did a bunch of them on photoshop (everything from ///M designs to camouflage to other things) and this is the one they picked (admittedly not my favorite of the group, but I still like it).

My wife and kids are at the beach this week, so figured it would be something to keep me busy and not bored all week (which it has), especailly with almost nothing to do on my e30 or GT6 right now.

I'll be at Summit Point with the 3 Pedal Mafia, driving the boat and Civic wagon and the Triumph TR7. We should meet up! My name's David.

Well, our team has three cars, I typically only drive two of them, just depends on what we're aiming for and who wants to drive what. We do long stints (2+ hours) so having to adjust belts at driver changes isn't a big deal.
