It's looking fantastic and will look so classic with paint.

As one who appreciates StarCraft boats, I say, "good job!"

That keel piece would look awesome unpainted with the rest of the hull painted.

Exactly what I have planned. The bumper trim will remain raw as well.

So I managed to get one coat of primer yesterday. Instructions say 24 hours before top coat, but I don't see mention of needing to sand before or not. Any paint gurus care to share their knowledge? It feels nice and porous right now, but I'd hate to ruin everything up until this point by not sanding it if it's required.

Also, this thing is tough to paint. I imagine the roll and tip method will be tough to keep any lines from forming with all the rivets and ridges. Probably have to do some wet sanding and buffing to get the finish I'm looking for.

What kind of paint are you using?

If you're letting it dry for 24 hours you usually need a little adhesion aid through sanding.  I usually paint while it is still tacky so that I don't have to do that.

Someone with more paint experience may have better data though.

Rustoleum Metal primer "Above the Waterline"

Top coat will be Duralux Topside Marine enamel

None of the instructions for either mention sanding before the next "recoat". Maybe I'll just scrub with a scotch brite, tack cloth, and on to paint.

Have I mentioned how much I HATE paint prep yet? Once this first section is done it will all go way faster, but right now I'm just over it. Ready to be working on interior at this point.

Life is good, but it's been making things difficult to allocate time for painting the top coats. This morning I did a quick sand and wiped down the surface for the first coat of color. I tried to do the roll and tip method, but my brush technique must be crappy. The finish from just the foam roller looks pretty damn good to me, so that's what I ended up doing. I'll try the tip method on the second coat tomorrow, but I'm not too confident in it. Once these two coats have dried most of next week, I'll be ready to drop it back down on the trailer. I really want it to have a long cure time before placing any pressure from the bunk boards to the paint.

I know these pics aren't great, but it's turning out better than I feared.

I'd invite a couple buddies over when its dry, then carry it outside and turn it upside down on sawhorses in the sunniest spot of the yard and let it cook for a week.

In reply to Mr_Asa :

I've thought about removing the bunk boards and letting it sit on the trailer rollers then using my rear brace for the sawhorse to keep it stable. I don't have enough man power I trust available to flip it. Either way I'm going to try to let it get a considerable amount of cure time. After some light reading it appears waiting a day between coats will help keep things from getting gummy, so that's the plan. Probably also helps that my primer coat has been drying for a week.

I spent a few minutes scuffing the surface with scotch brite before rolling on another top coat. Sandpaper was clogging up, so that seemed to work best. The second coat went on well, really well. I'm super happy with how this is turning out. I'll try to get it to bake in the sun this week if possible, but hoping to start putting some primer on the transom and top soon.

There's a little orange peel to the finish, but it looks good enough to me. It's a boat. I may consider some wet sanding and buffing, but I don't know if that's possible with this type of paint. Also I'm lazy.

Now I just have to figure out what color to paint the dash, kick board, and seat base. I'm thinking the smoke grey I used on the trailer would be nice for contrast. The inner walls will be white as well as the seats so I want to mix it up a bit but keep it classy.

I've used RVinyl before, really like it.  Wears well, not effected by UV.  The burl is nice looking.

Ooooh I like that idea. It had a vinyl skin on it before, but pulled a lot of the grain structure from it. Not sure about the wood look but maybe there's something else they have that would foot the bill.

First coat of color went on last night. I messed with the dry brush method, and it went better. Unfortunately there was some trash in the paint that kept popping up, so there is some sanding to do before the final top coat. It's probably going to get another day to cure before I can get to it though. Hopefully Thursday night I'll get the last coat on and be ready to put it back on the trailer by Sunday afternoon.

You can see a bit of what I assume to be hail damage, but it's a boat.

I spent some time sanding down the surface before starting the next coat as there was quite a bit of trash in the paint as well as lines that I think came through from the primer coat.

Untitled by hatchethairy, on Flickr

Because I was worried about the trash in the paint, I bought some filter socks.

Untitled by hatchethairy, on Flickr

It worked perfect. No crap in the paint at all, at least from inside the paint can. I let the coat dry a couple hours and then pulled all of the tape. It looks good. Damn good. I'm leaving town this evening, so it will be curing all weekend for the most part. Sunday night I want to get it back on the trailer and get started painting inside the hull, gunwales, and dash.

That's a really nice color.  I think the wood grain vinyl mentioned earlier for the dash would go with it nicely.

When I was younger and dumber I poured intelux bright side into an automotive spray gun and painted my project mr2. I'm pretty sure it was the same color. It turned out pretty well. Better than some "automotive" single stage paints I've tried since.

I'd love to see an mr2 in this color.

I'm pretty pleased with this brand so far. It lays pretty flat, seems to be pretty forgiving considering I'm the dope that rolled it on. $50 for a gallon if I remember correctly, so not too outrageous on price. They also have a damn good selection on colors.

Just to show what I did over the weekend, it's a boat on a trailer! We have some hot days in the next few days, so it's a good time to get that fresh paint baked in a little.
