A week ago, the Kid car (2002 Ford Escape) announced its retirement by launching a rod through the side of the block.
This, of course, is a less than optimal situation. Cue the search music!!!
We looked at motors (too much money for a reman, too many miles for a yard motor.). Well, E36 M3. OK, let's keep an eye on the used car market.
Wednesday, a 2009 Nissan Sentra popped up with not too terrible mileage, and at exactly 1/2 challenge price, not too terrible a deal either.
So, Thursday afternoon, I grabbed the code reader, jumped in the van, and we went to look at it. It has a few codes, but nothing drastic.
Offered $900, and the PO accepted!
So, today- oil change (helped a lot). Rotated the tires, cleaned it out, took it for a drive. Next up is to wash it, polish the headlights, and start fixing trouble codes. This thread will be to document the work I've done to it (while teaching the teenagers basic car care).
PO stated the oil light flickers. Hmm. Car sounds ok. Oil looks ok, but a bit low. After oil change? Car sounds much better. No goobers in the oil, no flickery light. Awesome.

The Escape (previous kid car) has survived three crashes, a broken lca, and more wear and tear than any vehicle has a right to suffer through.

Ok, hivemind. What do we like for restoring yellow headlight lenses? I do not want to drop the scratch required to replace them...
Mosquito repellent in a aerosol can. Spray it on, you'll see the oxidized sunburnt plastic get melty. Wipe it with a towel, spray again, wipe till looking pretty clean. I only let it sit on the plastic for like 5-10 seconds.

Plastic polishing compounds seem to be a rub away from shiny and clear. Just did a set - will see how long they stay that way.
Plastix polish does amazing, for like a month or 2, then just spend another minute a side and make them amazing again for the next few months, rinse and repeat
Without that, Nufinish and Bon Ami cleanser does the same thing, and actually smells and looks the same as the Plastix polish
