Both for $2k
In reply to DaveEstey: pretty sure I have a transmission I would let go for a decent price. Shipping might be tough though.
In reply to MrJoshua:
I have two spare transmissions sitting on the shelf, but I'm always on the lookout to hoard more!
I was going to do this this weekend, but I had a crap day at work so I came home and did some therapy wrenching. This was a night of milestones.
First time engine and transmission have met:
Not all that glitters is gold:
A few choice curse words and a beer later:
And because I wanted to throw it on to see how it would look, here's the header:
The delrin engine mounts worked like cake. The Mazdaspeed transmission mounts took some work to squish so I could thread the bolts. The whole ordeal is in there SOLID now.
I was in a good mood so I pulled some stuff off the shelf to take inventory:
I could be accused of being a brand whore I guess.
Never seen a rotary pulled/dropped before. I'm surprised how small the thing is honestly.
Looking fantastic, I'm jealous.
Yeah I can be in the bay with the engine. Compact and shoved up against the firewall for better weight distribution.
Mazda hung a huge intake off of it and put the accessories as far away as possible and put huge plastic shrouds around the radiator fan and giant intake tubes across the engine bay. Tiny engine covered in crap.
If anybody is curious as to what it has taken to get to where the car is now, he's a screenshot of my budget sheet. This is why smart people tell you to buy a used race car rather than build a new one. I'm still glad I've done it this way.
The left total is stuff to be purchased. The total on the right is what has been spent. This list isn't complete as I bought a lot of things before it was started and I really don't want to know the actual totals. Too scary.
Waiting on an order of 1 x .095 4031 tubing (cro-moly) from Aircraft Spruce so I can build out the rear of the car and get the radiator situated. The order shipped 3 hours after I placed it and it's 2-day shipping by default. I'm really impressed with the service thus far.
I also ordered a $20 grab bag of cut 4031 cutoffs. They say it's at least 20' so I'm interested to see what I get and what I can turn it in to.
Built like a brick E36 M3house. Also larger ID than the RB header so it breathes a little more freely.
Great thread, man. I enjoy going back and reading threads that've been going for a few years - you not only see how the car is progressing, but you see how people's lives progress. I digress; I've owned an RX-7 of every generation, but the FC has always had the special place in my heart. Best of luck with the build, can't wait to see everything come together.
In reply to paddylopez:
Thanks man
Got my cro-moly shipment in! Fab work to start soonly.
In other RX7 news, I'm picking up another 87 GXL next Saturday for Lemons with a couple hillclimbers and gasp my boss who wants to get in to racing. The theme?
A new player has joined the game:
Not bad for $650. Runs and drives - transmission makes noise. Could be the pilot bearing. Also came with another transmission and a driver's side door. Lemons here we come!
The battery in Red (not to be confused with the hillclimber that is blue) was dead, so I swapped in a new unit and it fired right up! Awesome.
The car runs great: Awesome
The car has an incredible fuel leak: Not awesome
The car needs a transmission swap (sounds awful): No big deal
The car has an aluminum hood: Awesome and I'm going to steal it for Blue and put my TII hood on Red.
Well I caught a break from shoveling snow. 9' in the past 30 days has been rough.
We took a break during the blizzard and worked on red a little.
All gutted. New fuel lines have been run and we started ripping garbage out of the engine bay. We're pretty much ready for cagework.
On the hillclimb car, I'm pondering fuel cell locations. I have a tall/narrow 5-gallon cell (plenty for hillclimbs and some HPDE shtuff). The issue is with the radiator in the rear there isn't much space. Plenty of space on the passenger side firewall though.
I'll need to box it in to pass tech, but I can't come up with any issues having it there. Thoughts?
Mailbag: Got my Facet fuel pumps (2) from racer parts warehouse. Why two? Redundancy. I already have a bypass fuel pressure regulator, so I can't over-deliver when it comes to fuel and the pumps will stay happy too.
Waiting on my bonus to pay out so I can get the rest of my shopping done and really start throwing this thing together.

Twas a joke!
We have won 3 Lemons races with a 1st gen and 1 Lemons and 1 Chump race + a sprint race with our 2nd gen.
You should be fine!
I don't think the car will be the weak link, but we're trying to approach it in a semi-professional manner. Only a couple beers allowed while wrenching....
Meanwhile, the hillclimber is going to get an influx of parts so I can get it all put together again. AWR front strut tubes
Bilstein P30 inserts revalved by Turner Motorsports
MSD 6A and two coils
New driveshaft for TII tranny to N/A rear-diff
Braided oil lines
Rebuild kit for my Weber 48 DCOE
Injector hole plugs
RB Oil pressure sender sandwich
Its no wonder everybody says to buy a race car rather than build one. But at least I know everything is done right.
