It's berked. Chris and I jumped in after work this evening and adjusted the rockers. Put everything together started up and sounded great for 10 seconds. Then it came back. Can't feel it in the valve cover but one I checked the oil it has metal in it.
I have the sads.
I also have a whiskey.

Bummer. :-(
I saw an ad for what sounded like a good 305 SBC for cheap if that interest you?
Naw right now Chris and I are arguing about putting the Cadillac engine in it. He doesn't want to do the mounts. I know it'll be great once done. If t not there's enough Chevy truck on CL with bad transmissions.
Vortec time.
Need me to keep my eyes open for you up here?
We're semi compromising and going to look at a bad transmission 383 tomorrow.

Ooh! A 383 should be fun in the truck!
Sucks to hear about the engine .
I had the opposite kind of truck day. I finally got around to tackling the project of fixing the loose/wobbly tilt column in one of my many GM vehicles that have that affliction. I am no longer scared of this job or intimidated by it.
In reply to ClemCougarSparks :
That's why it's great working with Chris. It's a man thing to show no fear and just do it when another man is watching. Been many times we admit afterwards that E36 M3 went a lot better than we thought it would.
You mean GM tilt columns aren't supposed to wobble?

I know! The Mrs' '83 K20 doesn't wobble and I was like "Uh, this is weird. I didn't realize this was an option in the '80s."
That was one of the first things I learned to do on a car... Fix the wobbly steering wheel in our 85 Grand Prix. Hated the job, but I have to admit, it's one of the easier things to do if you have the puller for it.

Nice! Any idea what's up with your Silverado?
I knew you asked this somewhere but took me a while to find it. We followed normal Stampie procedure and let the truck sit for 4 months before replacing the fuel pump today. Started right up but now my headlights are inop.
I don't know if that's coming out or going in...but I'm guessing coming out. And to that I say, "Stuff's gotta come apart before it can go back together!" Cool!
In reply to ClemSparks :
Yes that's the old one coming out. A GRMer wanted it so we (they did most) pulled it in four hours. I bought a replacement from Pat while we were in Ohio. Now to keep Stampieitis at bay so we don't let it sit around forever.
FYI there is no pushrod for the fuel pump on the engine you got from me. The pump is just a blockoff. I was having higher rpm starvation problems and tossed an electric pump on and cured it. This info should save you from some madness. The old pushrod looked fine when it came out, i’m guessing the pump was weak.
In reply to Patrick :
Yeah I was going to get a real block off plate and go electric although today we started the old 350 after it sat for 6 months. Cranked 10 seconds until we had fuel at the carb then three pumps and it started. Now to find a cheap puller pump and a not chrome block off plate.
Oh, how I despise chrome. Good luck!
So, stupid question: why replace a running small block chevy with a different one?
In reply to Dusterbd13 :
The one in there had rod knock. She's been sitting for 6 months cause well ... I suck.
A few weeks ago I was leaving a customer's house and saw an old RV down the road sitting behind a neighbor's. I kinda thought that I should come back and see if I could buy it. On Monday guess who my last customer was? Turns out the RV belongs to the grandfather and he lives a couple of hours away. Cousin of his blew the 454 at 5000 miles in Atlanta. It was rebuilt and since then drove it back to Jacksonville, to the keys and back, and maybe a few hundred miles around town so I figure 3000 miles on the rebuild. Today we agreed on $450 for the whole RV and will finalize it on Saturday.
Gratuitous RV and BBC porn.
Do you have a plan for that big block yet? Cool score if the engine is good. A lot of work, but still cool.
In reply to ClemSparks :
Right now I'm leaning towards putting it in as is. Seller said he started it a while ago after he rebuilt the carb but then the carb flooded out the next time he went to start it. He also admitted that he's about 50/50 on carb rebuilds. I figure we need to get it out of there anyway and its only 3.5 miles from my house so throw the rebuild QJet from the old 350 on it with a outboard boat gas tank and burn some rubber. Ok maybe not so much in an RV.
Now I take this with a grain of salt but he said the 454 was rebuilt by a "race" shop and performed much better afterwards. He said he has all the paperwork from the rebuild so I want to go over that. That said I was reading a bolt on build of an 86 454 and while yes they made 200 hp more, the stock engine out performed the build below 3000 rpm. I think no matter what, if it runs it'll have much better performance than the original 6.2 diesel or the 350 that didn't last.

That's actually the video of the build I read last night. While it does make me want to build a crazy 500hp BBC Challenge vehicle I'm not sure it'll work for the K30. Here's the dyno graph I was talking about. Notice the area at 3200 rpm and below.
I approve of 454 swapping things almost as much as I approve ls swapping things
