It is but I'm not happy with the stock.  No big deal as I knew I wouldn't be. Think it's time to make a broomstick with a handle.

What’s wrong with the stock, and why did you buy it if you didn’t think you would?

I knew I could build one lighter before I ordered it but I wanted something to shoot it now and I/Chris will probably build an AR15 that can use this one later.  After putting it on I didn't like how it looked.  It's too bulky in it's lines and doesn't match the rest of the rifle.

Stampie, If you need some threads turned on a lathe for a non-standard size, there are a few folks on the forum that might be able to help. The shipping to you would probably be cheaper than buying a specialty die...

Thanks but I think I'll end up needing several and it's something that if I can do it on the fly I'd feel better about messing a piece up.  I really should get my lathe's thread cutting ability working.

Changing (or modifying) the bolt release on the 10/22 is the single best quality of life item on these guns. I hated mine in stock form but I'm assuming you have that in the works.

The mag release on the 10/22 is kind of like re-assembling a MkIII pistol... PITA, until you figure out the trick.  Then it's no big deal.

That'll probably happen with the trigger change.

I haven't forgotten about you guys. To catch you up to speed I ordered the following:

Aluminum Castle nut - this locks the stock tube in place. I thought I could get it locally but all they had was steel.

Aluminum muzzle brake - The thread protector just didn't do it for me. Found this on eBay cheap.

BX Trigger - found on eBay for $50. Much cheaper than the $80 I was planning on so had to grab it.

5mm and 7mm carbon fiber rods. We can't change the trigger group and not make custom carbon fiber pins can we?  Currently stuck in Dayton OH since Monday. No offense to anyone there but WTF I want my carbon fiber.

I also found a die so I can thread the custom stock. It wasn't bad at $21. Still need to get a tap in 1 3/16 16tpi so I can attach the butt plate.

I took a half day at work so I went by the local metal place (Alro Metals - great people) and got a 12 inch by 1.5 inch bar to make a mandrel for cutting the tubing I got last week.

Everyone loves pictures so here's me cutting off the more bent end. It's amazing how straight a bar of metal looks until you put it on the lathe.

Cool. Did you do the easy mod to the bolt hold open so it “unlocks” when you pull the bolt back?

This has be wanting to get my .22’s out. I just remembered i have the old and newer model 10/22 charger pistols. Need to play with those.

Not yet.  Right now I'm in USPS purgatory.  Enough that I went down to the Post Office today to complain.  I think I have 4 packages doing strange things.  At least my CF left Dayton after sitting there 5 days.

I know how you feel.  When we moved to our new house it wasn't in the USPS system yet or on google.... I've had so many things disappear lately I can't fathom it.  I live in Dallas, TX... not the burbs not two hours outside the city in DALLAS, and no one can find our house.  Really?  It's crazy.  Oh and when the post office put our address in the system they added a space erroneously.  Apparently they've never heard of compound words.

That's an awesome little gun you have built there!!  A zillion years ago (ok, more like 23 or so...) I bought a bone stock 10/22 with the factory bull barrell.  It's still pretty much bone stock, except for the scope.  I've had many different ones on it over the years, but eventually I settled on the BSA "Sweet-22" 3-9 x 40mm one I have on it now.  It's got target turrets, and way more magnification that I need, but those turrets make it a cinch to get zeroed.

I hadn't shot it in years until pretty recently.  It's still an absolute tack-driver.  I'm considering one of the BX trigger assemblies.  What is your impression of the one you bought?  The price is certainly attractive. Other than that, a different stock, with a longer comb, and an extended charging handle (the windage turret on the scope will chew up your finger using the stock charging handle) is all it really needs to be perfect.  (for me anyway).

I’ve only played with mine in the package so far. It definitely breaks at a lighter pull. Very limited first impression is nice but more travel than I’d like. I may still be spoiled by a Remington 700PSS that I used to own. That trigger was light, crisp, and had no take up.

We got stuffs. Last week our 1 3/16 16tpi die came in. Today we got the corresponding tap, our aluminum castle nut, and aluminum muzzle brake. Took all of 5 minutes to put the nut and brake on so I blew my load quick.

Did a weigh in as this should be the heaviest it gets from here on out.  Now I have to lose 14.75 oz.

I'm thinking I pissed off someone in OH. My carbon fiber shipped a week ago out of Dayton.  It's made it to Cincinnati so far.  Still working on the lathe but it's slow going. This is my first real thing I've made so the learning curve is hindering me.

Still waiting on carbon fiber.

Went to a gun show this morning. Was pretty underwelming but I did pick up two BX25 magazines for a decent price.

Got bored this afternoon so I did the auto bolt release mod.

Before

After

That unbored me for 15 minutes so think I'll jump on the lathe for a bit since it's too early for a whiskey.

Love the build sir - this is a more interesting path than I see people go down.

I built this after my College Rifle Team air rifles made everything I owned feel weak by comparison.  I started the same place as you with a basic blues model dad picked up cheap at an auction.

I remember finding the 1” diameter 20” bull barrel and the unfinished laminate stock cheap on gunparts.inc when that was a thing.

I learned an interesting on why the unfinished laminate was so much cheaper than the finished one... that stuff is insane and wanted to be treated more like metal than wood.

Recently upgraded glass to a 6-18x50 and found a nice trigger kit including a better bolt release/mag drop from red streak for ~$85 to get a 1.8lb trigger.

Incredibly happy with these bits as the trigger  was the only thing not up to par.

It's been a few months since I've updated this. In that time I've done nothing on the 10/22. In fact my lathe is surrounded by Model T&A parts so I can't even get to it.

I have been thinking about needing a gun safe. Buying a new one is out because I'm cheap and what fun is there in just buying something already made?  Last week I was on Craigslist, I can't remember the search exactly but it was probably one of those fun time wasters like "ton" or "press".  I saw a server rack and the light bulb went off. Found this and picked it up today.

I'll need to line it and build shelves but it'll end up giving me 2 foot wide by 3 deep and little over 6 high of inside space once done. Not bad for $90 so far.

Never thought of an older server rack as a gun cabinet, but that's a great idea!

So 2 and a half years later after doing absolutely nothing to the 10/22 we have progress. Few weeks ago Lil Stampie and I built an AR from NOS Bushmaster parts. That snowballed into us gathering up parts to build a .450 Bushmaster AR because well let's just say I need to ban myself from GunBroker.

Today we went to the range at a local gun store that we both like. Amazing enough employees actually wear mask. This is my first time shooting in probably 15 years and Lil Stampie's first time ever on a real gun  We shot my Sig 226. Damn kid is probably a better shot than me but don't tell him.

Anyway when we got home Lil Stampie asked about taking the 10/22 next week. Earlier today we took the silver buffer tube ring to get it coated matte black so I said sure if that's ready. Then about 30 minutes ago he said we should put in the bx22 trigger that's been sitting here for way too long.

First we removed the front lower rail because it's just added weight.

Then the original metal trigger group.

Then we put in the new lighter trigger group.

By my math that takes off 2.7 oz so we're getting closer. I never finished my stock and now I have different ideas for it but I think we'll end up around 3.5 lbs without going titanium crazy.
