Chevy or Buick V6, some three speeds are really small, swap the rear axle.
There is a local guy who drives a bright yellow Sprint Car as a DD, I think he commutes in it during the summer.
Never been able to see the car standing still to get a better look at how he did it.
Swap to an OLD School "Track T/Indy Roadster" type front end for maximum win.

Buick V6 is a great engine choice.  Always wanted to try one.  Sell the quick change to someone actually racing.  Replace with an early Jag IRS or homebrew something with a narrowed 8.8, maybe.  

There are some very small three speeds that could fit the bill, but around here they were mostly worked to death in the trucks they came in.
